    • A mobile computing device is provided having more than one imaging engine, and preferably, two imagining engines. Switching circuitry is provided for switching between the two imaging engines. Each imaging engine is optimized for use in specific applications and includes different specifications from the other imaging engine. Preferably, one imaging engine is optimized to provide higher resolution images than the other imaging engine, and one imaging engine is optimized to focus an object located 7.50 to 12.50 cm from the mobile computing device (near-to-mid range imaging), while the other imaging engine is optimized to focus an object located from 12.50 cm to infinity from the mobile computing device (mid-to-far range imaging). One imaging engine preferably includes a color image sensor, while the other imaging engine includes a black and white image sensor. The imaging engines are preferably supported by a housing of an optical code reading device configured for imaging and decoding optical codes and performing other functions, such as video teleconferencing, capturing and storing digital images, creating and transmitting video e-mail, and performing video surveillance.

    • A system and method for expiring a software module on a wireless communication device is disclosed. According to one embodiment, the method comprises receiving, at the wireless communication device, an expiration notice for the software module and determining if license renewal of the software module is automatic. If the license renewal is not automatic, then the method includes notifying a user of the wireless communication device of the receipt of the expiration notice, and de-activating the software module upon receipt of instructions to not renew. In certain embodiments, the software module is de-activated after an expiration of a trial period if no instructions are received from the user in response to the notifying step. The method may further include sending the renewal instructions to the software module server upon receipt of instructions to renew, receiving an activation key from the software module server in response to sending the renewal instructions, and activating the software module utilizing the activation key. If the license renewal is automatic or receipt of instructions to renew are received, then the method includes sending the renewal instructions to the software module server, receiving an activation key from the software module server, and activating the software module utilizing the activation key.

    • An integrated exit window lens array and imaging and illuminating engine for an optical code reader to illuminate and image remote target indicia, such as an optical code, is provided. The integrated exit window lens array and engine includes an image sensor for receiving reflected illumination from the remote indicia and an illumination assembly illuminating the remote indicia. The illumination assembly is capable of providing a plurality of different outputs, such as light having different wavelengths. The illumination assembly can also be provided with a single illuminating device for providing one illumination output for illuminating substantially the entire field of view. A transmissive, optical element overlays the engine for preventing light generated by the illumination assembly from reflecting back towards the image sensor. The integrated exit window lens array and imaging engine is an integrated circuit package configured for easily interfacing within an optical code reader as a plug-and-play component.

    • A bar code scanning system and method for reading and processing bar code symbology uses a scanning station installed above the check-out stand and a receiving station at some distance away from the scanning station. The scanning station projects light onto a surface of the check-out stand. The projected light can have a well defined border indicating where a user should place items to be scanned. Alternatively, a pattern coincident with the projected light can be projected onto the surface and which includes a target indicating where items should be placed for scanning. Light reflected by items in the target region is processed to decode optical symbology on the item and produce a signal that is representative of said sensed symbology. Information about the scanned item can be processed and displayed by the receiving station for use in, e.g., a point-of-sale transaction. The system can also be configured to capture images of a user's payment card for use in payment processing and to store images of at least selected scanned items for use in subsequent processes.
