    • Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide methods and apparatus for utilizing a physical layer (PHY) header comprising an identifier for an access point (AP) or a Basic Service Set (BSS). A station (STA) that is assigned an order in a sequential response sequence may count only frames with PHY headers that contain the correct identifier. A STA may terminate its sequential access procedure when it receives a frame with a PHY header that specifies a different identifier for the AP or BSS that assigned the sequence. In this manner, the STA may prevent partly synchronizing to an overlapping network and avoid accessing the wireless medium at the wrong time.

    • Simultaneous, multi-user uplink communication is scheduled in a wireless network by transmitting a poll message to a plurality of access terminals in response to receiving a first request to transmit data via uplink. The poll message includes a solicitation for requests to transmit data from each of the plurality of access terminals. The poll message also includes a medium reservation and schedule for transmission of the requests from the access terminals. Based on the requests received from the access terminals, a number of the access terminals are selected for simultaneous transmission of data via uplink. A transmit start message is sent to each of the selected access terminals indicating when and for how long the selected access terminals may transmit data via uplink. After the data is received, a block ACK message is sent to each of the selected access terminals indicating successful simultaneous communication.

    • A technique enabling enhanced stations to communicate with other enhanced stations that periodically or sporadically enter power save mode is disclosed. If a Q-station targeted for a direct link is in power save mode, an access point “wakes” the Q-station. The targeted Q-station responds by transmitting back a PS-Poll frame. The access point then forwards an awaiting direct_link_protocol_request frame to the targeted Q-station, which then responds by transmitting back a direct_link_protocol_response frame to the transmitting Q-station. Subsequently, the targeted Q-station can expect to receive a frame directly from a Q-station requesting the direct link. For example, a data frame containing data or a direct_link_protocol_probe frame can be transmitted. In this way, Q-stations do not have to track when other Q-stations are in power save mode.
