    • A first wireless communication device including a physical layer device configured to generate a data packet having a mixed mode preamble. The mixed mode preamble includes a first portion to be transmitted omnidirectionally via a single stream, and a second portion to be transmitted in a beamformed manner. The mixed mode preamble includes a signal field corresponding to information about the data packet. The signal field includes a first sub-field that indicates a number of streams of the second portion and a second sub-field indicating, based on the first sub-field, whether to perform a beam change between the first portion and the second portion or whether to perform channel smoothing on the second portion. A transceiver is configured to transmit, from the first wireless communication device to a second wireless communication device, the data packet having the mixed mode preamble.

    • In a method for generating a physical layer (PHY) data unit, pilot tone contribution sequence values for a first set of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols and for a second set of OFDM symbols are determined using a pilot mapping function. The first set is to be included in a signal field of the data unit, and the second set is to be included in a data portion of the data unit. The first set and the second set are generated to include pilot tones modulated based on the pilot tone contribution sequence values determined, respectively, for the first set of OFDM symbols and for the second set of OFDM symbols. The signal field is generated to include the first set, and the data portion is generated to include the second set. The data unit is generated to include at least the signal field and the data portion.

    • In a method for generating a physical layer (PHY) data unit for transmission via a communication channel, a first set of modulation coding schemes (MCSs) and a second set of MCSs that correspond to a number of spatial streams and a number of encoders are provided. The first set of MCSs correspond to a first channel bandwidth and the second set of MCSs correspond to a second channel bandwidth, and the first set of MCSs is different than the second set of MCSs. An MCS is selected from the first set of MCSs when the PHY data unit is to be transmitted using a channel having the first channel bandwidth, and the MCS is selected from the second set of MCSs when the PHY data unit is to be transmitted using a channel having the second channel bandwidth. Information bits are encoded using the number of encoders and according to the selected MCS, and the encoded information bits are parsed into the number of spatial streams. The encoded information bits are modulated according to the MCS, and a plurality of OFDM symbols are formed based on the modulated encoded information bits.

A second portion of the PHY data unit is generated according to the second format, wherein the second portion of the PHY data unit includes PHY information elements not specified by the first format.
