    • A dental scaler is disclosed wherein an air-driven rotor is driven about a shaft to impart vibrations thereto and drive a work tool or other object attached to the shaft. The vibratory device includes means on the shaft for correcting displacement of the rotor from its drive position. That means comprises a portion of the shaft beneath the rotor means having an enlarged diameter such that movement of the rotor caused by shaft wear is corrected. Additional means may be associated with the rotor, e.g., chamfered end edges of the rotor, which minimize pressure differentials at the end of the rotor edges and consequently assist in centralization of the rotor about the outlet means on the shaft. The fluid outlet means comprises outlet ports in the shaft wall beneath the area of rotation of the rotor, the outlet ports having chamfered outside end edges to minimize power losses from turbulence. Additionally, means are provided along the shaft for selecting the vibrational mode in which the vibratory device operates.

    • A collet wrench adapted to place a predetermined force on a collet threadedly secured in a dental handpiece. The wrench comprises a frame and means on the frame for securing the rotor shaft against rotation. A shaft is rotably mounted in the frame, and has a lower end of non-circular cross-section. The lower end is received in the collet and is adapted to rotate the collet relative to the rotor shaft. A disc having ratchet teeth is keyed to the shaft and a second disc having ratchet teeth is placed on the first mentioned disc and held there by a spring force. Rotation of the second disc causes the rotation of the first disc, and the subsequent rotation of the shaft having the end secured to the collet. After a predetermined force has been applied to the second disc, it will slip relative to the first disc, and accordingly apply a predetermined force to the collet. The pressure of the spring controls the predetermined force.

    • A pumping system for use in medical applications where liquids must be infused and aspirated from a mammalian patient, and whose economics are such that it is cost effective to simply dispose of it after a single use. The system features positive displacement pump(s) such as reciprocating pump(s) containing a damping mechanism to dampen out the peaks and valleys in the fluid pressure that is pumped, which is important for preventing cavitation. The system furthermore features a shut-off valve on the extraction side so that certain injected fluids such as contrast medium, are not immediately pumped out of the patient. In a preferred embodiment, the system also features means for independently controlling the fluid pressure/volume on the infusion and extraction sides, self-priming capability, a continuous fluid path, and visual air bubble detection, with viewports located at important points in the fluid path, such as at pumps and valves.

    • A system and method for opening a lumen in an occluded blood vessel, e.g., a coronary bypass graft, of a living being. The system comprises an atherectomy catheter having a working head, e.g., a rotary impacting impeller, and a debris extraction sub-system. The atherectomy catheter is located within a guide catheter. The working head is arranged to operate on, e.g., impact, the occlusive material in the occluded vessel to open a lumen therein, whereupon some debris may be produced. The debris extraction sub-system introduces an infusate liquid at a first flow rate adjacent the working head and withdraws that liquid and some blood at a second and higher flow rate, through the guide catheter to create a differential flow adjacent the working head, whereupon the debris is withdrawn in the infusate liquid and blood for collection outside the being's body. The introduction of the infusate liquid may also be used to establish an unbalanced flow adjacent the working head to enable the atherectomy catheter to be steered hydrodynamically. A guide wire having an inflatable balloon on its distal end may be used with the atherectomy catheter to block the flow of debris distally, while enabling distal tissues to be perfused with an oxygenating liquid.

    • An air-driven dental scaler is disclosed having water transport means associated with the tool assembly for delivering water to a scaling type work tool. The water transport means comprises a tube disposed within a hollow connector body and extending between a water plenum at one end of the connector body to the other end of the connector body, whereat the scaling type work tool is attached. The water transport tube has an internal diameter of greater than 0.010 inch and a surface roughness smoother than 25 micro-inches to minimize clogging of the tube by mineral deposits or sediment. The independent fluid path permits the use of hard, martensitic stainless steels for the work tool and softer, corrosion-resisting austenitic stainless steels for the water transport tube. The water transport means delivers a controlled quantity of water to the work tool and the water is atomized by the vibratory movement of the tool.
