    • Method for controlling a laser power used in recording on an optical disk includes: causing the laser to emit a test light emission pattern including a multipulse light emission interval and an at-bottom value continuous light emission interval; receiving the test light emission pattern of the laser to convert the pattern to an electric signal and to thereby obtain a light detection signal; calculating a detection value of a multipulse average value from the average value of the light detection signal, and calculating a bottom detection value from the light detection signal to obtain a light emission power characteristic of the laser on a supplied current based on the detection value of the multipulse average value and the bottom detection value; and controlling the current supplied to the laser based on the light emission power characteristic on the current supplied to the laser.

    • In an optical disc drive, a laser light source emits a laser beam having an intensity changeable with the amount of drive current supplied. A first photodetector receives the laser beam reflected from an optical disc, thereby generating a readout signal. A second photodetector receives the laser beam, generates an electric signal representing the power of the laser beam received, and outputs the electric signal as a light quantity detection signal. A feedback control loop compares the level of the light quantity detection signal with a predetermined target value and regulates the drive current such that the level of the light quantity detection signal approaches the target value. In reading data from the optical disc, the target value is changed so as to compensate for a variation of the sensitivity of the second photodetector, thereby controlling the power of the laser beam emitted from the laser light source.

    • An information reproduction apparatus of the present invention comprises a rotating section 2 for rotating an information carrier 1 on which a unit of continuous information capable of being continuously read out is recorded, a CLV control section 9 for controlling the rotating section in such a manner that the information carrier is rotated at a constant linear velocity, a CAV control section 9 for controlling the rotating section in such a manner that the information carrier is rotated at a constant angular velocity, a rotation control selection 14 for selectively operating the CLV or CAV control section, and an information determination section 14 for detecting an information length of the continuous information. The rotation control selection section is constructed in such a manner as to selectively operate the CLV or CAV control section based on a result of the detection of the information length of the continuous information.

    • A data transfer system transfers original data from a first data storage device to a second data storage device. The transfer system includes a compressor, an encryptor, and a controller. The compressor receives the original data from the first data storage device, generates compressed data of a smaller size, and passes the compressed data to the second data storage device. The encryptor makes a predetermined cryptographic key and passes the key to the second data storage device. The encryptor also receives the original data from the first data storage device, encrypts the original data with the cryptographic key and then sends the encrypted data back to the first data storage device. The controller controls the compressor and the encryptor and gives the first data storage device a first erase instruction, telling the first data storage device to erase the original data, in accordance with a first transfer command.
