    • An affordable ventilation controller comprises a low cost and very stable carbon dioxide sensor and a remote-controlled louvered suction fan equipped with an air filter. The ventilation controller operates independently of any existing heating or cooling system that might be present in a closed room. The carbon dioxide sensor measures accurately the gas concentration level in parts-per-million (ppm's) as a ventilation index. When a predetermined ventilation index is exceeded indicative of bad ventilation, a remote-controlled suction fan equipped with a louver and an air filter is activated to draw in fresh air from the outside in order to regulate the CO.sub.2 concentration and provide good ventilation. However, if an exceedingly high concentration of CO.sub.2 is sensed, the controller inhibits the control signal to the suction fan, since such a high level might indicate the presence of a fire.

    • The measurement of weak absorption lines is facilitated by the use of a long transmission path length, which is difficult to obtain in compact or portable instruments. In the present invention, light is made to travel through a limited volume of gas thousands of times. The light is placed on a closed optical path on which it circulates through the gas sample. After a desired number of passes through the gas sample, the light is removed from the closed optical path. Introduction of the light to the closed optical path and removal therefrom is accomplished through the use of a polarizing beamsplitter and a pockels cell located on the closed path. Light is put onto the closed path by the polarizing beamsplitter which imparts a specific polarization. During the first circuit the pockels cell alters the polarization by 90 degrees thereby preventing the light from escaping back out through the polarizing beamsplitter. After the desired number of circuits, the pockels cell again alters the polarization by 90 degrees thereby permitting the light to be redirected out of the closed path by the polarizing beamsplitter.

    • An NDIR gas sensor is housed within a mechanical housing made up of a header housing, a can mounted to the header housing, and a sample chamber mounted above the can. The can has a top surface with a pair of windows formed in it to allow radiation to enter and return from the sample chamber. An electronics module is mounted on a printed circuit board hermetically sealed within the can. A signal channel path length detected by the signal detector is greater than a reference channel path length detected by the reference detector and an absorption bias between the signal and reference outputs can be used to determine a gas concentration in the sample chamber. Both the signal detector and the reference detector have an identical narrow band pass filter with the same Center Wavelength (“CWL”), Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) and transmittance efficiency at the CWL.
