    • Described are mechanisms for verifying configuration information in 2547 BGP VPNs. An originating PE generates a first knowledge digest encoding first configuration information associated with a current set of information advertised for a VRF. The originating PE also generates a second knowledge digest encoding second configuration information associated with cumulative information advertised for the VRF. The originating PE is capable of receiving a message from a user PE, the message including a third knowledge digest encoding third configuration information related to the user VRF. The originating PE is capable of comparing the first knowledge digest to the third knowledge digest and producing a first indication if the third configuration information encoded in the third knowledge digest is not a subset of the first configuration information encoded in the first knowledge digest.

    • A first network element forwards a set of packets associated with first configuration information along a path to a second network element. Logic in the first network element generates a first knowledge digest encoding the first configuration information into a fixed length bit array. Logic in the second network element generates a second knowledge digest encoding second configuration information into a fixed length bit array. Logic in the second network element compares the first knowledge digest to the second knowledge digest, and generates an indication if the comparison indicates that the first configuration information is not a subset of the second configuration information.

    • A virtual private network is provided across a Provider Link State Bridging (PLSB) network between a first node connected to a private LAN and a second node connected to a roaming device. The roaming device is authenticated. A successful authentication results in a Service Identifier for the VPN being sent to the second node. Connectivity between members of the VPN service instance is maintained as part of the PLSB Link State process for forwarding table maintenance, rather than by any form of explicit signalling. A single Customer Virtual Bridge/Virtual Switch Instance can be located at the first node to provide point-to-point connectivity to each roaming device. A virtual Residential Gateway function can be combined with the Customer Virtual Bridge/Virtual Switch Instance.

    • Probe and stop probe messages associated with an ingress access point are processed at an egress label switched router. The ingress access point may consist of an identifier of an ingress network element, in combination with a LSP identifier provided by the ingress network element. Auto-registration is performed upon receipt of a probe message indicating an ingress access point not currently being tracked. In the event that a probe message is received indicating an ingress access point not currently being tracked, the egress label switched router adds an entry to a tracking data structure, and a central processor is notified. Each entry within the tracking data structure stores information for a corresponding ingress access point, including knowledge digests from probe messages and an indication of the time a last previous probe message was received. As probe and stop probe messages are received, the knowledge digests they include are compared with the knowledge digests stored in the corresponding tracking table entries. In the event of a conflict between a received knowledge digest and a stored knowledge digest, a predetermined action is taken, such as generation of a misbranching alarm. The knowledge digests may, for example, be Bloom Filters. In the event a stop probe message is received for an ingress access point associated with one of the entries in the tracking table, the corresponding tracking entry is removed.

    • Mechanisms for measuring network availability are described. A first network element produces a first knowledge digest encoding the first set of forwarding policy indicators associated with a set of packets into a fixed length bit array. The first network element periodically sends probe messages containing the knowledge digest to a second network element. The second network element produces a second knowledge digest encoding a second set of forwarding policy indicators into a fixed length bit array. The second network element compares the first knowledge digest to the second knowledge digest to determine whether the first set of forwarding policy indicators is a subset of the second set of forwarding policy indicators. The second network element indicates the availability of the path as long as probe messages are received from the first network element.

    • Described is a process and system for providing an extensible forwarding plane data communications channel adapted to selectively support operations, administration and maintenance (OAM) activity within one or more different domains of an Ethernet transport network. The data communication channel is established using Ethernet protocol data units forwarded within the forwarding plane, between network elements. The Ethernet protocol data units can be Ethernet OAM frames modified to include an OpCode indicative of a maintenance communication channel. The OAM frames are generated at a selected one of the network elements (source), forwarded along the same network path as the Ethernet frames, and terminate at another network element (destination) associated with a maintenance level identified within the OAM frame. The source and destination network elements can reside on a domain boundary using the Ethernet OAM frames flowing therebetween to relay maintenance communications channel messages.

    • The downstream IP packets of uni-cast services, such as Internet Access or Voice over IP network, are transported over the pseudo wire from service provider nodes at the metro hub to the access edge, whereupon they are converted to be transported on the first mile technology, such as a DSL loop, that serves the subscriber's residence. A television service provider delivers the collection of television channels through the regional network to an intermediate node, herein called the metro edge device. The function of the metro edge for downstream uni-cast traffic is to de-multiplex the downstream pseudo-wires coming on packet trunks from metro hubs, into a greater number of packet trunks leading to access edges. In this invention the metro edge device is operable to unicast individual selected channels to the subscriber's residence by adding copies of the IP packets of the selected channels into the downstream flow of packets in the subscriber's pseudo wire.

    • To allow seamless interworking between an 802.1ah service instance (ISID) and a VPLS service instance, the AGI value used to signal the setup of the pseudowire portion of the VPLS may carry the ISID value of an associated 802.1ah service instance. This allows the service instance to be identified end-to-end across the Ethernet and VPLS networks using the same value without modifying how the MPLS network operates. The VPLS network will use AGI/AII signaling to set up pseudowires on the MPLS network, but instead of using an AGI value assigned by the MPLS network, the AGI value that is assigned will be taken from the ISID value of the Ethernet frame or from ISIDs registered by the Ethernet network. The AGI message may be given a new type value indicating that the AGI message carries a value that corresponds to the ISID value on an attached Ethernet network. Alternatively, an existing AGI message type may be used to carry the ISID value, and a second type field may be used to indicate that the AGI contains an ISID value.
