    • The invention is directed to a trocar adapted to form a seal around a surgical instrument, the trocar comprising a cannula having an axis extending between a proximal end and a distal end; a housing having a proximal wall and forming with the cannula a working channel sized and configured to receive the instrument; a septum seal disposed in the housing and extending transverse to the axis of the cannula across the working channel, the septum seal having a normal state when the instrument is absent from the working channel and a stretched state when the instrument is being withdrawn from the working channel; portions of the proximal wall of the housing defining an orifice sized and configured to receive the instrument into the working channel; and an elastomeric ring-shaped projection extending axially distally between the proximal wall and the septum seal, the ring-shaped projection having an axial length adapted to deform to prevent inversion and binding of the septum seal and the orifice upon withdrawal of the surgical instrument. In particular, the septum seal is prevented from reaching the orifice in the proximal wall of the housing when the instrument is withdrawn. The projection may be bonded, insert-molded, or compressively fitted to the proximal wall of the housing. The projection may be formed of an elastomeric material such as natural or synthetic rubber. The projection may further comprise a plurality of portions or fingers extending axially distally from the proximal wall, each of the extending portions or fingers may further include a living hinge. In another aspect, the ring-shaped projection may be formed on the surface of the septum seal instead of the proximal wall of the housing. That is, the ring-shaped projection may be formed to extend axially proximally from the surface of the septum seal toward the proximal wall of the housing.

    • A multi-seal trocar system (10) includes a plurality of co-axial sealing elements (30 60,80) adapted for forming a seal with either a large or small instrument. Small and large scaling elements (45,62) are disposed in an in-line arrangement such that a single port is provided for instrument insertion. A zero seal (80) is disposed distally of the sealing elements to seal a working channel of the system and to prevent backflow when no instruments are inserted The small sealing element (45) is configured such that insertion of a large instrument automatically moves the small sealing element (45) out of its path, thereby avoiding contact with the large instrument.

    • A surgical clamp includes a shaft having clamping jaws at a proximal end and an operative handle assembly at a distal end. The shaft has properties for being moved to a desired shape by the user prior to operation of the handle assembly and for holding the desired shape during operation of the handle assembly. The shaft may include a bendable element extending along an axis between the handle assembly and the jaws. A control element disposed relative to the bendable element is operable from the handle assembly at the proximal end of the shaft to move the jaws relative to each other at the distal end of the shaft. An associated method includes the step of bending the shaft to a desired shape prior to operation of the clamp and maintaining the shaft in substantially the desired shape during operation of the clamp.

    • A catheter adapted to increase the patency of a body conduit includes an elongate tube having an axis extending between a proximal end and a distal end, and a balloon disposed at the distal end of the tube and having properties for being expanded to a high-profile state and for being contracted to a low-profile state. A sleeve disposed over the balloon has a pair of ends disposed on opposing sides of a central section, the ends having a floating relationship relative to the tube with the central section disposed circumferentially of the balloon. An electrode disposed outwardly of the sleeve has properties for being electrosurgically energized to incise materials defining the body conduit when the balloon is in the high-profile state. The electrode can be formed of a plurality of elements stranded to increase the surface area of the electrode. The catheter can be inserted relative to a guide member having a conductor which carries the electrosurgical energy from the proximal end of the tube to the electrode at the distal end of the tube. An associated method includes the step of introducing electrosurgical energy into the conductor of the guide member to energize the electrode of the catheter.
