    • Printing on a recording medium by lateral scans of a print head in accordance with print data. Content of print data is determined. Then, the print data is printed either with a first lateral scan process using a critical zone at edges in a lateral scan of the print head for printing, or with a second lateral scan process that does not use the critical zone for printing. The first or second lateral scan process is selected based on the print data. Preferably, the critical zone is sized in correspondence with ramp up non-uniformities of a print carriage on which the print head is mounted, so as to accommodate a distance between a point where print degradation due to speed non-uniformities are noticeable to a point where print degradation due to speed non-uniformities are no longer noticeable. The second lateral scan process preferably is a process in which a predetermined margin is inserted into the first lateral scan process. The second lateral scan process is used if print data for a current scan and print data for a previous scan, in at least the critical zone, are continuous print data, thereby alleviating ripple effects for the continuous data. In a case where the print data for the current scan and the print data for the previous scan are not continuous print data, the print data preferably is printed using the first lateral scan process.

A determination is made as to whether print data for a current scan and a prior scan overlap in either of two critical zones at lateral extents of the recording medium, where carriage speed ringing and overshoot non-uniformities are most prevalent. If print data for a current scan and a prior scan overlap in either of the two critical zones, the current scan is printed in the same direction as that of the prior scan. On the other hand, if print data for the current scan and the prior scan do not overlap in either of the two critical zones, then printing of the current scan is effected in a direction opposite to that of the prior scan.

    • A multi-head printer, and a driver therefor, in which the multi-head printer has at least a wide width print mode and a standard width print mode. At least first and second print heads are mounted for lateral reciprocal movement across a support surface for a recording medium, with the first and second print heads being laterally displaced with respect to each other such that both the first and second print heads can print a first lateral print area and such that only the second print head can print a portion of a second and larger lateral print area. In the standard width printing mode, fully or partially overlapped printing in the first lateral print area can be effected by both of the first and second print heads. In the wide width print mode, printing by only the second print head is effected, and not by the first print head. An additional wide print mode may be provided for partially overlapped printing by the first and second print heads, with the second print head printing primarily in the second lateral print area. Based on print head configuration, such as the type and color capability of print heads mounted in the first and second print heads, available print modes are determined, from which one of the available print modes is selected for effecting printout by the printer.
