    • An improved transaxle having an intermediate shaft (14) on which is freely journalled a plurality of forward gears (54,56,58) and a reverse gear (62) in close proximity thereto, and a positive-neutral-position collar (60) disposed between the spur gears and the reverse gear. A shifting key (92,94) is axially slidable disposed on the intermediate shaft and has an end portion (98) thereof which is yieldably biased radially outwardly from the outer surface of the intermediate shaft for selectively engaging separately each of the gears (54,56,58,62) freely journalled thereon. The positive-neutral-position collar (60) has a recess (90) radially outwardly disposed in ire bore and which recess is formed to receive the yieldable biased end portion of the shifting key therein when the shift key is moved between the forward gears and reverse gears, thereby providing the user a positive indication of neutral gear position. A ring gear assembly (140) is also provided with the improved transaxle, and includes a ring gear (136) carrying a bevel gear assembly in its interior, both of which are contained in a cavity in the housing (12) for the improved transaxle. A pair of bearing shoes (148,150) are directly disposed between the teeth of the ring gear (136) and the housing cavity (12) and between the opposite sides of the ring gear and the housing cavity. The bearing shoes (148,150) have an arcuately-shaped inner surface (168) against which the ring gear teeth (136) are rotatably placed. During rotation of the ring gear, bearing surface therefor is provided by the teeth of the ring gear and the inner surfaces of the bearing shoes.

    • A compressor (10) and suction accumulator (20) assembly wherein the suction accumulator (20) is mounted on the casing (12) of the compressor. The accumulator (20) includes a cylindrical casing (22) having two end walls (24, 30). A first end wall (24) includes an inlet aperture (26) and the second end wall (30) includes an outlet aperture (34). The second end wall (30) is circular and substantially flat and has a thickness greater than the casing (22) of the accumulator (20). The outlet aperture (34) in the circular second end wall (30) is spaced radially outwardly from the center of the second end wall (30) near the periphery thereof and is spaced further outwardly from the compressor casing (12) than the center of the circular end wall (30). A suction tube (32) extends through the outlet aperture (34) into the accumulator casing (22) and is bent inwardly toward the center of the accumulator casing (22) whereby the inlet opening (44) of the suction tube (32) is disposed coaxially with the cylindrical casing (22) of the accumulator (20). The other end (39) of the suction tube (32) is bent at right angles with respect to the first end (33) and extends into the compressor casing (12). The assembly may also further include a screen (46) disposed between the inlet and outlet apertures (26, 34) of the accumulator casing (22).

    • An internal combustion engine is provided with a lubricating system and a full flow oil filtering circuit (12) arranged in parallel with the main oil lubricating circuit (44) of the engine. The lubricating system includes drive means (48) an oil lubricating circuit (44) for lubricating the drive means, an oil sump (30) connected in flow communication with the lubricating system and an oil pump (46) connected in flow communication with the sump (30) and a lubricating system and operably driven by the drive means (48) for pumping oil from the sump (30) through the lubricating circuit (44) and back to the sump (30). The parallel flow oil filtering circuit (12) includes an oil filter (50) disposed adjacent the oil sump (30) and connected in flow communication therewith. An oil pump (52) is disposed adjacent the sump (30) and connected in flow communication with the sump (30) and the oil filtering means (50). The oil pump (52) is driven by engagement with the governor gear (36).

    • A scheme for mounting a permanent magnet group (41) on the flywheel (11) of a small internal combustion engine to provide the moving portion of an ignition system for such an engine is disclosed wherein the engine flywheel is formed of cast iron or similar ferromagnetic material and the magnet group is magnetically isolated from that flywheel so as to minimize short circuiting of the magnet group flux. A generally flat region (21) of the flywheel receives a spacer or plate (35) formed from aluminum or a similar substantially non-magnetic material such as zinc with that plate sandwiched between the flywheel and the magnet group by a pair of aluminum or similar non-magnetic material rivets (27, 29) passing through the flywheel plate and magnet group. The magnet group is held accurately and rigidly in position by upsetting the rivets in such a manner as to axially compress and therefore radially expand the rivet material so that the rivets tightly fill the respective apertures through which they pass. A further overlying plate (53) of aluminum, zinc or other non-magnetic material may be included to retain the magnet group in position on the flywheel.

    • A horizontal shaft oil pump (11) is provided for use in a compressor (10) comprising an outer housing (12) having an inlet (30). an outlet (24), an oil sump (48), and a crankcase (42) mounted therein. The crankcase has a generally vertically disposed passageway (46) therein in communication with the oil sump, and a crankshaft (52) is horizontally rotatably received in a bore (50) in the crankcase. A reduced diameter portion (84) of the crankshaft forms between the crankshaft and crankcase an annular chamber (86) in communication with the passageway, and a pair of oppositely angularly disposed helical grooves (88, 90) are disposed in the crankshaft on opposite sides of and in communication with the annular chamber. Upon rotation of the crankshaft, a low pressure area is developed in the annular chamber causing lubricant to be crawn upwardly through the crankcase passageway and into the annular chamber. The rotating helical grooves deliver lubricant from the annular chamber to opposite ends portions of the crankshaft for lubricating bearings and other moving parts.
