    • 324,318. British Insulated Cables, Ltd., and Wilson, L. B. Oct. 12, 1928. Electricity, supplying by meter; mechanism for prepayment rent; delivery of electricity otherwise than by meter and time-controlled apparatus.-In a prepayment mechanism for use in the supply of electricity, a remote control device, operable by an external authority, is actuated by a high frequency current to prevent the main switch controlling the supply to the consumer from closing, until a definite fixed charge has been prepaid by the insertion of one or more coins or tokens into the prepayment mechanism. As shown employed in conjunction with an ordinary prepayment meter, the coin for the fixed charge is inserted into a coin barrel 16, Fig. 1, which is turned by a handle 11, the barrel being constructed and operating as desscribed in Specification 285,937. A cam 10 is thereby caused to actuate an arm 13, Fig. 3, to separate contacts 8, 9 on arms 6, 7, the arm 6 being held in open position by a projection 3 on a spring-controlled pivoted armature 2 of a highfrequency relay 1. The arm 6 is connected to the line 28 of the lines 28, 29 on the consumer's side of the prepayment meter 30, the arm 7 being connected to the line 29 through the winding of a magnet 31 and through a main switch 33 to the line 29. The magnet has an armature 32 associated with the switch 33. Lines 26, 27 lead to the source of supply and the relay is connected across the lines 26, 28. The meter 30, actuated by a barrel 21 and handle 22, controls a switch 37, 38 connected in parallel with the switch 8, 9. After a predetermined interval, say a week, the relay is actuated by the supply company to close the contacts 8, 9 thereby energizing the magnet 31 which opens the main switch 33. The switch 33 cannot be closed until a further coin is inserted in the barrel 16 for the fixed charges. The magnet 31 is also energized when the consumption causes the switch 37, 38 to close. The relay 1 and associated parts may be used independently of a metering arrangement. When more than one coin is required for the fixed charges, the cam 10 is actuated from the barrel 16 through a gear train.

    • 318,316. British Insulated Cables, Ltd., and Handley, W. C. June 6, 1928. Vacuum or low-pressure apparatus, arrangements of.-The circuit of a flashing or audible signal or the like is periodically closed by means of a relay operated by current impulses derived from a D.C. source through a neon lamp or like discharge device associated with a condenser connected to the D.C. source through a resistance. The supply source 3, 3 which may be a generator driven by a stream- or tide-driven water-wheel when the arrangement is applied to signal buoys in rivers or tidal estuaries, supplies current over the resistance 2 until the condenser 1 reaches a voltage equal to the flash-over voltage of the neon lamp 5 thus causing the condenser to discharge at intervals through the operating coil 6 of a relay. At each discharge, the contacts of the relay operate to close the circuit of the signalling device 11 which may comprise a lamp or horn or both. In a modification the relay operates the signalling circuit through a second relay associated with a dash-pot for increasing the period of energization of the signalling device by retarding the opening of the relay contacts. Means are also associated with the first relay for breaking the charging circuit of the condenser during the period of discharge through the neon lamp.

    • 273,637. British Insulated Cables, Ltd. June 30, 1926, [Convention date]. Cores, yokes; brush-holders.-An electric fan &c. motor has a cast steel field magnet made in two halves adapted to receive a single cylindrical exciting coil and disposed within an iron casing, each half of the magnet having a pole projecting through the adjacent part and beyond the outside surface thereof so that an increased length of magnetic leakage path is obtained between the pole tips and the top and bottom of the. magnet. The part 8 of the field magnet, has a downwardly extending pole-piece 54 and the part 9 has an upwardly extending pole-piece 55. Cavities 8 , 9 in the field magnet receive the field coil 53. The lower end of the armature shaft carries the commutator 25 upon which bear brushes 28 of rectangular cross-section, sliding in metal brushboxes 29; the brush-boxes are held in insulators 31 attached to spokes 35 on a wheel shaped member 36, the rim of which is screwed on to the junction of the upper and lower casing parts 7, 49. The top of the casing 7 is formed with a boss 4 which screws on to a hollow vertical shaft 1. The boss 4 has an annular projection 15 which encloses the ball bearing 16, and to the upper end of the armature shaft is secured an oil or grease cup 18. The lower bearing housing 38 is secured to the spokes 35 and surrounds the bearing 39, the upper end of which is flanged and acts as the seat of the step bearing 40 on the armature shaft. A sleeve 42 on the shaft carries an oil or grease cup 41 and is formed with a helical groove 58 through which lubricant is fed to angular grooves 59 in the bearing surfaces. Holes 60 in the housing 38 allow the lubricant to drain back into the cup 41. A disc 26 below the commutator prevents carbon dust from the brushes entering the lower bearing. The sleeve 42 is slidable upon the armature shaft and engages, by a movable jaw 43, the boss 44 of the fan. The boss of the fan engages the shaft by means of a U-shaped link 45 secured by a cupshaped washer 46 and a nut 47. A thick felt washer 51 serves to prevent the entry of dust into the casing.

    • 589,172. Cable joints; cable sleeves. BRITISH INSULATED CABLES, Ltd., CHESWORTH, J., and CONNING, J. March 16, 1945, No. 6683. [Classes 36 and 38 (i)] A joint in a pressure cable 1, comprises a hard metal sleeve 12, supporting internally a sheath 4, exposed by unwinding reinforcements 5, 6, and a soft metal sleeve 8 slid over the sheath and reinforcements. The sleeve 8 has three internal diameters, corresponding to the sheath and reinforcements, and conical ends which are engaged by glands 9, 10. The gland 10 has tightening studs 11 screwed into gland 9 which forms part of a base 13, the sleeve 12 preventing the sheath 4 collapsing. A sealing chamber 18 is secured to the base and jointed at 21 to the outer sheath 7, a wiped joint 19 being made between the reinforcement 6 and the outer sheath 7 to prevent the ingress of composition between them. To avoid further leakage a sealing chamber 24 is provided on the gland 9 and jointed to the sleeve 12 at 28. In a modification, Fig. 3, (not shown), the sheath 4 extends through the sealing chamber 24 and beyond it to be jointed to the hard sleeve 12.
