    • A shared memory packet switching device includes: a shared memory providing a shared memory space; an input logic unit associated with at least one receive port, and being operative to determine whether the associated receive port is saturated by determining whether a number of packets received via the associated receive port and currently stored in the shared memory exceeds a drop threshold value; a packet routing control unit operative to determine a destination one of the transmit ports for each of the received data packets; and an output logic unit associated with at least one of the transmit ports, the output logic unit being communicatively coupled with the packet routing control unit, and being operative to determine whether the associated transmit port is congested by determining whether a number of packets currently stored in the shared memory that are to be transmitted via the associated transit port exceeds a congestion threshold value, and also being operative to generate an associated output full signal indicative of whether the associated transmit port is congested. The input logic unit is responsive at least in part to each of the output full signals, and further operative to cause a selected packet received via the associated receive port to be dropped if the associated receive port is currently saturated and the output full signals indicate that a destination transmit port associated with the selected packet is currently congested.

    • The present invention provides a polymer coating method. In the method, in a vacuum chamber, a low temperature monomer evaporation chamber is used to heat a liquid monomer and a cooled substrate at a temperature lower than the liquid monomer reservoir or vapor. The liquid monomer is allowed to condense on the cooled substrate surface where it is polymerized by a radiation source. The process depends on the vapor pressure difference between liquid in the monomer source and liquid condensed on the surface of the cooled substrate. The film thickness is dependent on the temperature difference between the monomer reservoir and the substrate, and the time that is required to move the coated substrate from the evaporation chamber to the cure station. The method is suitable for forming very thin, uniform, pinhole-free, polymer coatings from a variety of monomers, having at least two olefinic groups per molecule, on a variety of substrates.

    • Conventional stripline implementations of couplers in Multilayer Ceramic Integrated Circuit (MCIC) technology incur a cost disadvantage when compared to an equivalent microstrip implementation. This is primarily due to the increased substrate thickness needed to achieve the required performance. Conventional stripline couplers significantly limit our ability to optimise for smaller substrate thickness and therefore overall cost. However, stripline couplers are needed for stacked integration scenarios and as building blocks for complex active and passive RF circuits in MCICs. A method of implementation that overcomes this practical disadvantages is therefore highly desirable. To this end, the present invention presents a novel coupling device structure that enable RF designers to use the stripline coupler configuration, by achieving required levels of performance with much reduced substrate thickness. The invention outlines a structured design procedure and presents simulation results confirming the validity of the technique. In particular, to achieve this, the present invention proposes a coupling device, comprising a substrate 1, a first conductive layer 2 covering a first surface of said substrate 1, at least two electromagnetically coupled lines 3a, 3b being provided opposite to said first surface and being covered by at least one cover layer 4, 5, wherein at least one short-circuit stub Stub A, Stub B is connected between at least one of said electromagnetically coupled lines and said first conductive layer.

    • The invention relates to a multiplexing method used in a PDH network. Standard PCM signals are received in the network element, at least some of which are multiplexed on a time-division basis into the same outbound transmission frame, the capacity of the payload portion of the frame substantially corresponding to the capacity required by N PCM signals. In order that ATM cells may be transferred more advantageously than heretofore through an existing PDH network, the multiplexing is implemented as configurable in such a way that the total capacity of the payload portion cab be divided between at least two parts of variable capacity in such a way that each part can be allocated a desired portion of the total capacity of the payload portion in accordance with the current transmission requirement. A part of the payload depending on the desired capacity is allocated to at least one traffic source from a group in which a number of PCM signals constitutes a first traffic source and a number of packet data streams constitutes a second traffic source. The invention is specifically intended for transferring ATM traffic through a PDH network.
