    • In a machine tool having the spindle (110) supporting a work holder (350), means are provided for automatically operating the work holder to grip or release a workpiece and for automatically securing the work holder to the spindle or release it therefrom. Within the spindle, a compression spring (116C) acts on a slide (116B) which has claws (116) gripping a head (157) provided at one end of a holder housing (152) to draw the latter into engagement with a conical socket (115) of the spindle thereby to secure the holder. Within the holder housing (152), a compression spring (159B) urges a set of jaws (158A) into a conical socket (152A) of the housing (152) thereby to grip a workpiece (51). A hydraulic actuator (M316) mounted on fixed structure (102) is adapted both for opening the jaws and for releasing the holder from the spindle. For opening the jaws, a piston (M316B) of the actuator is moved through an initial distance X thereby to move the jaws in opposition to the spring (159B) in the opening sense. The piston acts through the intermediary of a rod (317) supported in the slide (116B) for free movement relative thereto. For release of the holder from the spindle, the piston is moved further, through a distance Y, to engage and move the slide in the sense causing the claws (116) to abut a shoulder (155B) on the holder housing and release the holder from the socket (115). Toward the end of the piston movement the claws spring radially outwards into a recess (110C) of the spindle to free the holder for removal by an automatic transfer mechanism. Several modifications are described.

    • PURPOSE: To realize a touch probe having a high sensitive mechanism by changing, in response to stylus formation due to the contact between the stylus and a work piece, the state of light reflection surface as a sensor so that changes in optical path length is detected. CONSTITUTION: A stylus 16 is, through a carrier 18, connected to a probe 10, and the carrier 18 is, through three cylinder rollers 20, supported so that it is excited to a kinematical position against a housing 12. When a work piece touches a sensing tip 26 of the stylus 16 to slightly deform the stylus 16, and the carrier 18 is displaced from its standstill position, laser light 102 incident on an interferometer cube 100 mounted on the carrier 118(18) changes the condition of a reflection surface of a mirror 106 provided as a sensor at the tip of the interferometer cube 100. The change in the reflection surface changes the optical path length of the light incident on the reflection surface, so, by detecting the change in the optical path length, a contact between the stylus 16 and the work piece is detected.

    • PURPOSE: To easily adjust the posture of a magazine which holds detecting elements by adjusting the relative position relation between the plate member of the magazine and a base by an adjusting means. CONSTITUTION: This mechanism adjusts the posture of the magazine 10 which holds the detecting element 12, 12... in the operation range of a coordinate positioning device. The mechanism is equipped with a base 18 for supporting plate members 20 fixed to the floor part of a device and the magazine 10, a fixing means 14 which fixes the base 18 to the floor part of the device, and the adjusting means 16 which is provided to one plate member 20 and the base 18 and applies an adjusting force to the other plate member 20 and the base 18. Then the relative position relation between the base 18 and plate members 20 is adjusted. Thus, the three-dimensional relation between the plate member 20 fixed to the device and the base 18 fixed to the device by the fixing means 14 is adjusted to adjust the posture of the magazine 10, and the danger of a collision between the device and a movable part of the magazine 10 is minimized to the suppress the danger of the collision.

    • PURPOSE: To position a probe easily over a wide range by setting a connector for connecting a probe with a swivel back from a swivel shaft when the probe is directing downward. CONSTITUTION: A rotor 14 is mounted rotatably on a supporting member 12 while a swivel 46 is fixed rotatably to a shaft 48 intersecting a shaft 16 perpendicularly and a probe 50 is connected with the swivel 46 through a connector 54. The connector 54 is set back from the shaft 48 of the swivel 46 when the probe 50 is directing downward. Consequently, the probe 50 can be mounted removably and can be replaced without requiring any additional positioning. When a wheel 108 is operated manually under that state, a coupling rod 90 is lowered through a rotary mechanism 94 and the supporting member 12 is uncoupled from the rotor 14. They can be coupled again by elevating the coupling rod 90 after adjusting the relative position.
