Starting; stopping; reversing.-In order that a multi-cylinder Diesel engine may be converted from a right to a left hand engine, the valve cam-shaft m and control levers l for starting, stopping, and reversing are adaptable for use at either side of the engine. The valve cam-shaft m is adapted to engage with, and be driven by, either of the pump cam-shafts g, g', identical bearings n being provided on both sides of the engine in either of which the shaft m may be mounted. The shaft m is provided with a groove engaged by the forked end of the reversing lever l and is moved axially for reversing. The starting lever l is adapted in the stop and running positions to disengage the cam rollers of the starting mechanism from the starting cams by means of an eccentric disc.

    • 230,109. Motorenfabrik Deutz Akt.- Ges. Feb. 29, 1924, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Reversing.-In a reversing device in which in succession the cam rollers c are raised, the cam shaft d is displaced axially, and the cam rollers are again engaged, these operations are effected by means of a disc u rotated by a hand-wheel b and acting through mechanical connections without the use of fluid under pressure. As shown, the disc u has two projections e for engagement with a recess e' in a disc n on a shaft i, which is connected by bevel gearing k, m to a shaft having an arm o connected by a link p to the valve rod q. The disc u also has a projection f for engagement with a recess f in a disc s provided with an arm connected by a link r to a lever for moving the cam-shaft d axially. Rotation of the disc u is limited by a fixed stop h engaged by a lug g on the disc. When reversing, the handle b and disc u are moved to the left in Fig. 1 to engage the disc n and turned to bring the cam bowl and valve rod to the position shown in dotted lines; the disc u is then moved to the right to engage the disc s and turned to effect axial movement of the cam shaft; and finally the disc is moved to the left again and turned to brine the cam bowl back to the position shown in full lines.
