    • Embodiments of the invention describe methods, apparatuses and systems for providing an efficient low power exit sequence for peripheral devices. In embodiments of the invention, a signal from a host device is transmitted to a SATA peripheral device for exiting a low-power state. An initialization time for OOB transmission and reception logic of the SATA peripheral device is tracked, and a reference time value based on the tracked initialization time is stored. In subsequent transitions from said low-power state, the reference time value for waking a host physical layer is utilized, thereby improving the efficiency of the management and use of said low power state. In some embodiments, the above described tracked initialization comprises a time from a transmission of an OOB signal (from the host to the peripheral device) to receiving an OOB response at the host device from the SATA peripheral device.

    • A mass storage device such as a disk drive or SSD (solid state drive) employs optimization logic for reduced power consumption in a host personal electronic device that identifies and prioritizes performance and power trade-offs by considering user expectations, user presence and application responsiveness. The storage device receives commands and information from the host device indicative of user expectations about application invocation, data freshness, and usage patterns, and determines a operational state indicative of behavior settings for reducing power consumption while maintaining the performance constraints required by the user expectations. The granularity of performance considerations communicated from the host device to the mass storage device is expanded to permit the storage device to determine, based on performance constraints from user expectations, appropriate and specific power reduction measures for maintaining the user experience.

    • The present invention relates to a power saving apparatus for a hard disk drive in a battery powered computer and to a method of controlling the same in the battery powered computer. CPU of the power saving apparatus is configured to generate a request signal for receiving battery level data from a power control unit, to enable a disk cache to operate in a write back mode if the battery level is available for a predetermined time period, and to control the power control unit to produce a switch off signal after writing all data contained in the cache into the hard disk is completed in response to a power off system management interrupt signal from the power control unit. With this configuration, access to the hard disk drive is restricted and power consumption of hard disk drive is reduced without the loss of data in the cache when there is a sudden system power off.
