    • A gear box has a clutch comprising a hub and a coupling, each having drive portions that are movable between engaged and disengaged positions. In the engaged position, the hub and coupling drive portions are engaged in a manner to allow torque to be transmitted between the hub and the coupling. In the disengaged position, the hub and coupling drive portions are spaced apart in a manner to prevent torque from being transmitted between the hub and the coupling. The clutch has an actuator that moves the hub and coupling drive portions between the engaged and disengaged positions. In moving the hub and coupling drive portions to the engaged position, the actuator is driven by spring pressure. In moving the hub and coupling drive portions to the disengaged position, the actuator is driven by hydraulic pressure supplied against the actuator sufficient to overcome the spring pressure.

    • A method includes forming a lamination that may be used in a rotor of an interior permanent magnet motor or further processed for use in a line-start interior permanent magnet motor. The lamination has been optimized for low cogging, minimal usage of magnet material, and maximum torque per ampere and may be further processed to include rotor bars slots to allow the lamination's use in connection with an LSIPM. In accordance with the method, the lamination is formed with magnet slots that are radially inward of the outer diameter. The magnet slots are formed in a plurality of V-shaped arrangements. Each V-shaped arrangement has a leading edge and a trailing edge. The leading edge and trailing edge are arranged such that when the leading edge aligns with a stator tooth, the respective trailing edge is generally not aligned with a stator tooth.

    • A rotor comprises laminations with a plurality of rotor bar slots with an asymmetric arrangement about the rotor. The laminations also have magnet slots equiangularly spaced about the rotor. The magnet slots extend near to the rotor outer diameter and have permanent magnets disposed therein creating magnetic poles. The magnet slots may be formed longer than the permanent magnets disposed therein and define one or more magnet slot apertures. The permanent magnets define a number of poles and a pole pitch. The rotor bar slots are spaced from adjacent magnet slots by a distance that is at least 4% of the pole pitch. Conductive material is disposed in the rotor bar slots, and in some embodiments, may be disposed in the magnet slot apertures.

    • A coupling transmits torque between shafts approximately aligned on a shaft axis. The coupling has a center axis approximately aligned with the shaft axis and a center element formed from an elastomer material. The center element has first and second axial sides. A clamp ring extends axially from each side of the center element along the coupling center axis. The clamp rings may include slots for fasteners for mounting the coupling to shaft hubs. The clamp ring has a flange portion embedded within the center element. Each clamp ring flange portion extends substantially away from the coupling center axis within the center element. An amount of extension away from the coupling center axis is selected to provide the coupling with a desired torsional stiffness characteristic. In accordance with a method, the coupling is formed by selecting the flange portions that will provide the coupling with a desired torsional stiffness characteristic.
