[Addition to 21,942/09.] Mantles.-Inclosing the ends of inverted or upright mantles by the method described in the parent Specification, the contracted part of the mantle is held in place by a serrated ring or an annular disk &c., or between two such rings or disks, while the part of the mantle within the ring is sewn. The spider may also be formed by sticking together the flattened materal of the mantle by means of an adhesive composed of a mixture of some organic adhesive with the nitrates of the metals employed in making the mantle. After the mantle 8 has been contracted by means of an iris shutter, the annular disk 30 with downwardly-directed points 31 is pressed upon the mantle, and before the annular disk and the mantle are removed from the mandrel, the material of the collar 14 is pressed flat and the mantle 8 turned upwards, as shown in Fig. 2. The annular disk is preferably placed in a circular recess on the sewing-machine, which limits the displacement of the disk 30 so that the sewing- needle can only work within the central aperture of the disk. When the spider is formed by adhesion, the adhesive is applied tu the flat pressed material through the opening in the annular disk, and the disk is left in position while the adhesive dries. If a quickly-drying adhesive is used the disk 30 may be dispensed with.

    • 21,942. Werber, I. March 20, [Convention date]. Mantles.-The ends of inverted or upright mantles are closed in such a way that a uniform contracted part or " spider " is obtained. A piece of hosa is drawn over a mandrel 3 tapered at the top end, the part above the mandrel is drawn together uniformly from all sides by an iris diaphragm &c., and is severed above the diaphragm. The mantle is either tied and sewn on a suitable sewing-machine, or tied and sewn. To obtain a very thin spider, the contracted collar is seized by a clamping-device to transfer the mantle to the sewing-machine. The mandrel 3 is enclosed by a sleeve 2 and pressed upwards by a spring 5; and a clamping-ring 7 on the sleeve 2 serves as a stop for the hose, which can be held by tightening the clampingÀscrew. The iris diaphragm 10 is vertically adjustable on an upright 12, and is contracted by turning a handle 11. The clampingÀdevice, Fig. 6, may consist of a number of resilient arms 15, connected at their upper end by a head 16, and drawn together by a sliding sleeve 17. A central mandrel 18 may be provided, and is inserted in the contracted opening of the mantle. The clamping- device may be so supported on the sewing-machine that it can be rotated about its own axis. The sewing may be effected in a spiral and a radial direction. An alternative clamping-device comprises a spring button in two parts 23, 24, Fig. 9, one part being mounted in a recess 22 at the top of the mandrel 3. When the hose has been contracted and cut, the member 24 is pressed into engagement with the member 23, as shown in Fig. 9. Thus, the flange on the opening of the mantle is pressed flat instead of forming a collar. Another form of clamping-device, Fig. 13, comprises a sleeve 25 inserted in an axial bore of the mandrel 3, and a pin 27 inserted in the sleeve, the opening of the mantle being gripped between flanges 26, 28.
