    • In image processing according to the prior art, the important part of photographic image data (referred to herein as the object) could not be determined and therefore required human participation.A computer 21 which is the core of image processing calculates an edginess which is an image variation from a differential value of data for adjacent picture elements in a step SA110, and determines object picture elements by selecting only images with a large variation in steps SA120, SA130. As optimum parameters for contrast correction and lightness compensation are calculated from image data for object picture elements in steps SA310-SA330, image processing indicators based on object picture elements are determined, and optimum image processing can be performed automatically. After summing a luminance distribution for each area of the image, which is a feature amount, while uniformly selecting picture elements in a step SB110, a reevaluation is performed by a weighting determined for each area in a step SB120, and a luminance distribution strongly influenced by the luminance distribution of the photographed object is thus obtained with uniform sampling. After determining the intensity of this luminance distribution insteps SB130-SB150, the image data is converted in a step SB160, and image processing can therefore be performed with optimum intensity while reducing the processing amount.

    • The present invention is directed to a monotone conversion apparatus that it is provided with a picture acquisition unit for expressing a picture in picture elements in a dot matrix form and acquiring picture data representing each picture element in gradation of prescribed element colors into which an original color is separated. Further, a luminance distribution totaling unit is used for totaling the luminance equivalent of each picture element on the basis of the picture data, where a luminance correspondence setting unit is employed to derive a correspondence relationship of luminance conversion for converting the pertinent luminance distribution on the basis of the totaled luminance distribution. Further, present invention contains a picture data conversion unit which generates monotone picture data where the luminance of each picture element in the picture data is converted on the basis of the derived correspondence relationship of luminance conversion.

    • An image processing apparatus inputs photographic image data containing dot-matrix pixels and converts the input pixels according to predetermined correspondence relationship information, so as to produce processed image data. A correspondence relationship holding unit of the apparatus holds correspondence relationship information, including a plurality of correspondence relationships, for the conversion, and applicable object information. The applicable object information includes, for each correspondence relationship, a respective condition. A correspondence relationship judging unit judges, for each of the input pixels, indicating whether a given pixel meets the condition of any of the correspondence relationships. An image data converting unit performs a conversion operation on the pixels of the input image data to produce processed image data. For each pixel, however, the conversion operation is performed using only the correspondence relationships indicated by the judgments of the correspondence relationship judging unit.
