    • A disk drive includes a ramp having a fixed portion that is fixed to the disk drive base, and a guide portion that is not. The guide portion includes a guide surface having a parking region that is in contact with an HGA lift-tab with the disk drive in a non-operational state. The guide surface also has a load/unload region that extends over a disk outer periphery. The guide surface defines a guide surface length that is measured from the parking region to the load/unload region. The ramp also includes a torsionally-compliant member connecting the fixed portion to the guide portion. A distance between the torsionally-compliant member and the parking region, measured approximately parallel to the guide surface length, is less than half the guide surface length. The guide portion is not connected to the fixed portion over at least two-thirds of the guide surface length.

    • A novel disk drive includes a disk drive base that includes a plurality of mounting recessions. Each of a plurality of mounting inserts at least partially protrudes into a respective one of the plurality of mounting recessions, and contacts the disk drive base. Each of the plurality of mounting inserts includes a body portion that is adapted to be attached to a host computer system. Each of the plurality of mounting inserts also includes at least one cantilevered beam having a root end that is attached to the body portion and having a distal end that is in contact with the disk drive base in a respective one of the plurality of mounting recessions. The root end is not in contact with the disk drive base when the mounting insert is in an undeformed state.

    • A switching router memory map is organized as 64-bit wide double words. The bi-directional data bus is only 32-bits wide, so the Least Significant Words (LSW) are mapped to the even addresses and the Most Significant Words (MSW) are mapped to the odd address. When the host writes to the even address the 32-bit data is stored in the bidirectional data bus buffer. When the host writes to the odd address the entire 64-bit double word access is posted to the appropriate global access bus. When a read operation is performed from an even address the entire 64-bit double word access is performed by the appropriate global access bus. The LSW is available on the bi-directional data bus address data pins and the 32-bit MSW is buffered within the bi-directional data bus. The host can access the MSW by performing a read from the odd address.

    • Time consuming analyzing of the dressing levels on bowling lanes is eliminated through the use of an apparatus that includes a path of travel (48) for a sample strip, a light source (50) on one side of the path (48) and a photosensitive sensor (46) on the other side of the path. A feed roller (60) is journaled adjacent the path and is driven by a stepper motor (58) in predetermined increments. An analog to digital converter (40) is connected to the sensor (36) for receiving analog signals therefrom and converting the same to digital signals. A random access memory (38) is connected to the converter (40) for receiving signals therefrom and for storing data represented by the signals. A central processing unit (34) is provided for operating the motor (58), the sensor (46) and the random access memory (38). Also included is a program storage (38) for storing control algorithms for the central processing unit (34) along with a port (66) connected to the central processing unit (34) for receipt of exteriorally generated commands and for outputting stored or otherwise acquired data.
