摘要： There is provided a thermal sensing fiber (100) including a semiconducting element (102) having a fiber length and characterized by a bandgap energy corresponding to a selected operational temperature range for the fiber in which there can be produced a change in thermally-excited electronic charge carrier population in the semiconducting element in response to a temperature change in the selected temperature range. At least one pair of conducting electrodes (104,106,108,110) is provided in contact with the semiconducting element (102) along the fiber length, and an insulator is provided along the fiber length. An optical transmission element (172) can be comprised in said fiber (100) .Said fiber can be used for measuring ambient temperature as well as for self-heat-monitoring. A grid of such fibers is disclosed for monitoring surfaces or structures.

摘要： In one aspect, the disclosure features an article, including a fiber waveguide extending along a waveguide axis, the fiber waveguide including a core extending along the waveguide axis and a confinement region surrounding the core. The confinement region is configured to guide radiation at a first wavelength, λ1, along the waveguide axis and is configured to transmit at least some of the radiation at a second wavelength, λ2, incident on the confinement region along a path, where λ1 and λ2 are different. The core includes a core material selected to interact with radiation at λ1 to produce radiation at λ2.

摘要： A reflector, a method of producing same and a method of creating high omnidirectional reflection for a predetermined range of frequencies of incident electromagnetic energy for any angle of incidence and any polarization. The reflector includes a structure with a surface and a refractive index variation along the direction perpendicular to the surface while remaining nearly uniform along the surface. The structure is configured such that (i) a range of frequencies exists defining a photonic band gap for electromagnetic energy incident along the perpendicular direction of said surface, (ii) a range of frequencies exists defining a photonic band gap for electromagnetic energy incident along a direction approximately 90° from the perpendicular direction of said surface, and (iii) a range of frequencies exists which is common to both of said photonic band gaps. In an exemplary embodiment, the reflector is configured as a photonic crystal.

摘要： A polymeric photonic band gap structure can be defined by a block copolymeric species, a mixture of homopolymers, or a combination optionally with appropriate dielectric contrast enhancing additives. The structure includes periodic, phase-separated microdomains alternating in refractive index, the domains sized to provide a photonic band gap in the UV-visible spectrum. Another method of the invention involves creating a defect in a polymeric article including a periodic structure of a plurality occuring separate domains. The defect can be created by inserting into the material a plane of a material different from materials defining the polymeric article. According to another method of the invention, a defect is created in a polymeric article, including a periodic structure of a plurality of periodically occuring separate domains, by altering polymeric material in the article. The polymeric material can be altered by removing polymeric material via radiation, by exposing the material to intersecting beams of radiation, by removing the material via etching or the like. A defect can be created in one embodiment by magnetically guiding a heated object through the article.

摘要： In a method for printing a three dimensional structure, a continuous- length of fiber that includes, interior to a surface of the fiber, a plurality of different materials arranged as an in-fiber functional domain, with at least two electrical conductors disposed -in the functional domain in electrical contact with at least one functional domain material, is dispensed through a single heated nozzle. After sections of the length of fiber are dispensed from the heated nozzle, the sections are fused together in an arrangement of a three dimensional structure. The structure can thereby include a continuous length of fiber of least three different materials arranged as an in-fiber functional de-vice, with the continuous length of fiber disposed as a plurality of fiber sections that are each in a state of material fusion with another fiber section in a spatial arrangement of the structure.
