Steam is passed through an injector e into a vertical passage and pipes c, and draws in air through an adjustable valve f, to regulate the temperature independently of the steam pressure. The injector is connected to the return pipe d so that uncondensed steam is re-circulated, and optionally also to an exhaust steam supply d . Non-return valves may be provided to allow escape of small quantities of steam and air for moistening purposes. Fig. 1 shows the application to a pipe system, but a radiator is also described, to be supplied with steam only. The valve f may consist of a hollow perforated plug, which can be screwed into the cap b to expose a varying number of perforations. An outlet g for condensation water is provided.

Direct steampressure apparatus. -Relates to steam traps in which the condensed water is returned to t h e boiler by the steam pressure, and more particularly to the construction and mode of actuation of the steam admission and relief valves. A spindle c is rotatably mounted in a casing over the body of the steam trap, and is actuated by a float. Valve discs d are carried on the ends of a double arm set on the spindle ; another valve disc g is similarly mounted on a lever h. These discs control the steam-admission ports a' and the relief port e', respectively. When the condensation water in the trap is below a certain level, the float holds the steam ports a closed, and the relief port, which is in connection with a check valve serving to prevent condensed water from re-entering the casing, is held open, so that the pressure is relieved by the escape of steam. When the water rises high enough, the valves are reversed, and steam from the boiler enters the trap through the opening b and the ports a , and drives the condensed water back to the boiler. The movement of the valves is limited by stops.

Viscosimeters.-A combined apparatus for ascertaining the viscosity and flash point of oils comprises a dished tray or base a, provided with standards b, d, e, carrying a stand c, and a swinging ring burner f and flash burner e respectively. In carrying out the viscosity test, an oil-jacketed dish g containing the oil to be tested is placed on the ring c, a cross-bar h having a spring-backed plug valve h and an orifice h for a thermometer being also secured to the ring. When the desired temperature is reached, the valve h' is lifted and the time taken by the oil in flowing through an orifice g in the base of the dish is noted. To obtain the flash point, a non-jacketed dish, a bracket carrying a thermometer, and a stirring-apparatus are used, the flash burner being swung across the surface of the oil.

Sluice valves. - In a parallel slide-valve of the kind in which two valve disks 2, 3 are arranged to be forced against their seats by a wedging-member 4 when brought into the operative position by a screwed rod 1, the valve spindle has a saddle member 1 supporting bosses 2 , 3 of the valve disks, and a spring 5 contained within a recess 6 of the operating-handle acts on the upper end of an extension 4' of the conical plug 4. A removable bush 7 is screwed into the lower end of the saddle member and acts as a guide for an abutment 10. When the valve is to be closed, the disks 2, 3 are moved downwardly and the pin 10 engages the plug 4 and forces the disks against their respective seatings.
