    • The invention relates to methods for qualitative evaluation of a material with at least one identification characteristic. A colour image of at least one identification characteristic is taken with the aid of an electronic image sensor. At least one first electric signal directly or indirectly correlating with the colour image is provided by the image sensor. An evaluation device connected to the sensor evaluates the first electric signal. A second electric signal is obtained from at least one reference image and stored in a data memory. The second electric signal has a respective setpoint value for the first electric signal for at least for two different characteristics of the reference image. The first signal is compared to at least two setpoint values contained in the second electric signal. In said comparison, at least the colour image of the identification characteristic is tested for colour deviation from the reference image and the identification characteristic is checked for association with a particular category of identification characteristics or for a specific geometric contour or for a relative arrangement in relation to at least one other identification characteristic of the material. The tests are carried out in a continuous printing process of a printing machine or in a continuous working process of a machine processing said material.
