    • In one of multiple mobile communication networks, a serving node responsible for locating mobile terminals is responsive to a registration request from a mobile terminal for storing the serving node identity in a home location database to which the mobile terminal is subscribed. In response to a location request message from a client terminal requesting the location of a target mobile terminal, a serving node identity is retrieved from the home location database of the target mobile terminal. The serving node identity represents the current location of the target mobile terminal. If the current location area is within the coverage area of location-based service provided by the client terminal, the location request message is forwarded to a serving node identified by the retrieved serving node identity. Otherwise, an error message is transmitted to the client terminal to indicate that the target mobile terminal is roaming outside of the coverage area.

    • For establishing a parent-child relationship between adjacent network nodes interconnected by a transmission medium, a handshaking circuit comprises a state detector for monitoring the transmission medium to detect predetermined first and second states and a contention that occurs when the predetermined first states are simultaneously present. A state machine asserts the first state for initiating a handshaking process and relinquishes this state when a contention is detected. A receive count value is continuously incremented from the instant the contention is detected to the instant the transmission medium changes to an idle state. A transmit count value is continuously incremented from the instant the first state is detected to the instant the contention is detected. When the transmit count value is greater than the receive count value, the state machine asserts the first state again and when the transmit count value is smaller than the receive count value, it asserts the second state.

    • A packet repeater is connected between an IEEE-1394 host terminal and a PPP server. The host terminal transmits a PPP packet containing the physical address of an IEEE-1394 device. During a discovery stage of a PPP connection, the packet repeater receives a PPP packet from the terminal, copies the physical address contained in the packet to an entry of a management table, and successively receives packets from the server and copies the physical address of the server and a session identifier respectively contained in the packets to that entry of the table. During a session stage of the connection, the packet repeater receives a PPP packet either from the terminal or the server and determines the destination of the packet according to the physical address of one of the terminal and the server which is set in the table corresponding to a session identifier of the packet.

    • In a bus reset process of an IEEE-1394 transceiver circuit, a signal is transmitted to a serial bus and a signal from the bus is received and applied to a higher layer. When a transmit bus reset signal is detected in the transmitted signal, a masking signal is exclusively applied to the higher layer in response to the start timing of the transmit bus reset signal. A receive bus reset signal is detected in the received signal. A count operation is started for incrementing a count value in response to the start timing of the detected receive bus reset signal until the count value exceeds a predetermined value. The received signal is then exclusively applied to the higher layer in response to the end timing of the count operation.
