    • An alert system includes a vehicle that transmits predetermined verification information within a communication range and a portable terminal that performs a predetermined alert operation on receiving the verification information. The portable terminal includes a control part that stores reference status being status of the vehicle and needing no alert operation. The control part regularly receives the verification information within the communication range. The control part determines that an alert operation is necessary when the portable terminal is moved out of the communication range from inside of the communication range and when a result of comparison between the verification information received immediately before the portable terminal is moved out of the communication range and the reference status stored in advance indicates that the verification information and the reference status are different. The control part performs the alert operation when it is determined that the alert operation is necessary.

    • A vehicle communication system includes a mobile terminal having a display screen in which display ON and OFF of the display screen can be operated by a user and a vehicle that performs communication with the mobile terminal in a first interval period when a connection has been established. The vehicle has an in-vehicle control unit that, before the connection is established, sends an inquiry signal for establishing the connection to a vicinity of the vehicle in a second interval period. The mobile terminal has a control section that, before the connection is established, performs scanning operation that enables the inquiry signal to be received in a third interval period. The control section can set the third interval period so as to be operational in at least two periods and sets the third interval period to the high-speed mode when the display of the display screen is on.

    • A remote engine starting system includes a portable terminal that is carried by a user and a vehicle that allows an engine to be started in response to receiving an engine start signal transmitted from the portable terminal. The vehicle periodically transmits a query signal for establishment of a wireless communication link with the portable terminal to a predetermined range surrounding the vehicle to define a predetermined wireless communication area of the vehicle. A control unit of the portable terminal determines, based on whether the wireless communication link with the vehicle is established, whether the portable terminal is within the wireless communication area. The control unit transmits an engine start signal when the portable terminal enters the wireless communication area surrounding the vehicle while automatic start setting is enabled by the user.
