摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a flame-retardant reinforced molding composition having improved electrical properties by mixing a polyamide resin with a halogenated flame tetardant, fibrous glass and or mineral fillers and pyro/polyphosphates. SOLUTION: The pyro/polyphosphates are metal pyrophosphates, metal polyphosphates, metal acid pyrophosphates, metal acid polyphosphates or mixtures thereof. Desirably, they are represented by the formula: M x Hy Pn O3n+1 (wherein M is a metal, desirably a group IA, IIA, IB or IIB metal x is 1-12; y is 0-12; n is 2-12; z is 1-5; and (xz)+y=n+2). Sodium acid pyrophosphate is the most desirable. The amount of the pyro/polyphosphate added is about 0.5 to about 40 wt.%. The polyamide which is desirable is polyamide-6,66,11 or 12. In order to improve the tracking index, the composition may further contain an olefin polymer.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a flame retardant having a high stability under thermal aging conditions in air by equilibrating a mixture comprising a brominated arom. polycarbonate, an equilibrating compd., and an equilibration catalyst in a specified temp. range. SOLUTION: A brominated arom. polycarbonate selected from among homo and copolycarbonates [e.g. 2,2-bis(3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxyphenyl)propane polycarbonate] having a wt. average mol.wt. of 25,000-100,000, 0.5-3.0 wt.% equilibrating compd. selected from among dialkyl carbonates, dihydroxyarom. compds., and polyhydroxyarom. compds., 0.01-0.3 wt.% equilibration catalyst, and 5-25 wt.% reinforcing polymer (e.g. a polyester) are compounded and equilibrated at 150-300 deg.C to give the objective brominated polycarbonate having a wt. average mol.wt. reduced by at least 35%. The catalyst is selected from among hexalalkylguanidinium salts and group I metal carboxylates (e.g. sodium stearate).

摘要： A system for providing process control information, such as viscosity, concerning a polymer melt comprises a means (22) containing a polymer melt under pressure; means (34) for diverting a stream of the polymer melt directly from said containing means to and through an orifice (54) of predetermined geometrical shape wherein the flow of said diverted portion to and through said orifice is unobstructed and directly dependent on the pressure of said main polymer melt wherein the cross sectional area is sized to permit the flow of said diverted melt polymer therethrough without additional independent means acting on said diverted melt polymer for increasing flow through said orifice. The system also includes temperature sensing means (70) for measuring the temperature of the diverted melt stream and producing a resultant temperature signal; pressure sensing means (74) for measuring the pressure of the diverted melt stream and producing a resultant pressure signal, said pressure signal being directly dependent on the pressure of polymer in said main polymer melt and the predetermined size of said orifice; and means weighing (56) at least a portion of said diverted melt stream discharged through said orifice, said weighing means including weight sensing means (60) for measuring the weight of diverted melt stream and producing a resultant weight signal. Computer means (64) is responsive to the temperature, pressure and weight signals for determining process characteristics of the main polymer melt.

摘要： High flow brominated polycarbonates, useful as flame retardant additives for other polymers such as polyesters, are obtained by equilibration of a brominated aromatic polycarbonate such as a tetrabromobisphenol A homo- or copolycarbonate with a di- or polyhydroxy aromatic compound such as bisphenol A, or a dialkyl carbonate, and an equilibration catalyst, under conditions such that the weight average molecular weight of the brominated polycarbonate is reduced by at least 35%. Preferred equilibration catalysts are Group I metal carboxylates, such as sodium stearate, and hexaalkylguanidinium salts.
