[Also in Division G4] In a liquid level measuring system a vertical tube 11 inside which a float 6 is positioned is surrounded by a coil 9 tapped at m equidistant points 10, the taps being connected in pairs via a two-out-of-m switching unit to an oscillator 14. The float is made from a material which is either ferromagnetic or a good electrical conductor or alternatively carries a member made of such material so that as it moves inside the coil the frequency of oscillation of the oscillator varies. In the embodiment described relay contacts close under the control of a selector switch to sequentially connect pairs of taps to the oscillatorpreferably taps n and n+2 (n = 1 . . . m-2) are interconnected. The selector switch is rotated by a control unit 18 until the frequency detector 16 detects a change in frequency. The display in an indicator panel 19 represents which pair of tappings are spannedby the member 7 and the frequency of the oscillator at that time may also be displayed to give a fine indication of the position of the member 7 relative to the tappings.

[Also in Division H3] Apparatus for comparing the magnitude of two binary numbers A, B comprises digital inputs a k , a k-1 ... and b k , b k-1 ... connected to a network operated by a high-frequency A.C. voltage 11 and including for each input pair a i , b i a path with one of diodes d1 k - conducting when A=B and paths with one of diodes d2 k -, d3 k - conducting when A>B, A 1 compensates for disturbance caused by the internal resistances of the ak inputs. The D.C. control inputs preferably enter at a central neutral point of the A.C. voltage. When using germanium diodes instead of silicon diodes the associated potential differences of equal digits are staggered relative to the different inputs a k , bk; obtained by the input a k simultaneously delivering two offset voltages and the bk input delivering two voltages lying between those of ak. In this case the windings of the 1: 1 transformers are split to receive the two voltages and a double pair of asymmetrical diodes is used at d 1 k (Fig. 3, not shown).
