    • A web tension isolator or amplifier includes a rotatable pulley engageable with a driver pulley in response to tension forces in a web that is wrapped on the driven pulley. The mechanism maintains the film tension ratio (i.e., the ratio of the tensions in the web portions on the two sides of the driven pulley) substantially constant regardless of the magnitude of the web tension. The mechanism automatically and quickly adjusts the web tension for any variations in the tensions of the web portions at either side of the driver pulley. The mechanism can be used (for example) in a motion picture projector between the film gate and a supply reel and/or a take-up reel.

    • Web support for engaging a fully constrained moving web, having a cylindrical roller which imposes no lateral constraint on the entering portion of the moving web and which angularly decouples the exiting portion of the moving web. An improved mounting mechanism dynamically supports the roller solely at its midpoint along a fixed shaft. A constraining member reduces the movement of the roller to rotation about the longitudinal axis, pivotal movement about a gimbal axis which is parallel to the plane of the entering web portion of the moving web and perpendicular to and intersects the longitudinal axis at the midpoint of the roller, pivotal movement about a castering axis which is substantially perpendicular to the plane of the entering web portion of the moving web and intersects the gimbal axis at a point upstream from the midpoint of the roller, and translational movement along the fixed shaft as required for pivotal movement about the castering axis.

    • Web-handling apparatus has a web drive member for advancing the web past a particular station, such as a film gate of a motion picture projector, a transducer of a magnetic tape transport apparatus, etc. A pair of capstan members for driving the web are symmetrically mounted along a web path at opposite sides of the drive member. Both capstan members are driven simultaneously in a direction for advancing the web toward the drive member, and they are both driven at a speed that exceeds the normal maximum speed or velocity that can be imparted to the web by the drive member so that slippage continuously occurs between the web and the capstan members. The web-handling apparatus can maintain static and dynamic tensions and tension variations in the web adjacent the web drive members at very low levels, thereby avoiding forces that tend to create web damage and avoiding undesired movement of the web at the station that can produce unsatisfactory reproduction of images or other record information on the web. Various embodiments of the capstan devices are disclosed.
