Piston or stuffing-box packing 6 comprises a sealing ring 8 of deformable material such as rubber and two backing rings of firmer material 10, 11 separated by an axially projecting tongue 9 of the ring 8. The backing rings are of laminated fabric bonded by rubber and they and the sealing ring may be separate from each other and any or all rings may be segmental or split but, preferably, all three are undivided rings bonded together to form a unitary packing. The sides of the sealing ring 8 may be tapered and formed with lips 14 as shown in Fig. 2, or the ring may be of U or part-circular cross-section. In a further arrangement, Fig. 6 (not shown), two packings as shown in. Fig. 2 are housed back-to-back in recesses in a piston so that they seal in opposite directions. Sealing in both axial directions may also be achieved by the single packing shown in Fig. 5 which has a second tongue 9 1 separating two further backing rings 10 1 , 11 1 .
