摘要： Agents which modulate pathways of apoptotic induction or repression in which products of opioid peptide precursor genes participate, are used as inducers of apoptosis in cells and in tumour cells in particular. Methods of treatment employing such agents and pharmaceutical compositions containing them are described. Examples of such agents include agents which interact with extracellular or cell surface membrane bound opioid-like molecules or their receptors. The agents may be coupled to peptides which assist in the transport of the agents through the cell membrane to promote internalisation and accumulation in the cell nucleus if this is the site at which the agent produces apoptosis. Screening methods and assays for such agents form a further aspect of the invention. Furthermore, the treatment of lens cells to prevent cell regrowth following cataract surgery by inducing apoptosis is described.
