Welding; flanging.-In a machine for welding flanges, collars, &c. on iron or steel tubes, the tube is rotatably mounted in a carriage, movable between a furnace and the welding-machine. The carriage c is traversed by manual power or by mechanism from the shaft q, along rails either laterally or in a circular path round the pivot f, so as to arrange it in front of the welding-machine b or the furnace. The tube m may be rotated by hand or from the shaft q which is rotated by bevel gear s from pulleys r or directly from an electric motor, and is arranged to rotate the tube m through a spur gear p movable on the shaft q, an idle wheel o and a gear n on the shaft k. The gears are mounted in a longitudinally movable headstock, the idle wheel o being carried by links 3, 4 to admit of vertical adjustment of the headstock by screws z, and bevel-gear from horizontal shafts connected by chain gear. To reduce jar and form a resilient drive the shaft k, which is connected to the cone carrying the tube by a ball joint, has a driving-collar k , Fig. 3, separated from the cone by springs l and driving it through spring-controlled thrust pieces l . The other end of the tube is supported on conical rollers g on a cradle adjusted vertically by a rack and pinion and worm or other gear. The headstock is moved along the carriages by a hand-wheel t to run the tube into the furnace or to the welding- machine, and the tube is rotated during the heating and welding operations. The headstock is fixed on the carriage by brakes u carried between plates v and actuated through any lever or toggle system from a screw w.
