    • A grill includes a lower platen assembly having a lower grilling surface and a pivotally attached upper platen assembly having an upper grilling surface. The upper platen assembly includes three motors encased in a shell. A cable attached to each motor suspends the upper grilling surface. The grill is automatically calibrated to ensure that the upper grilling surface is level. Each motor independently and sequentially raises the upper grilling surface from the lower grilling surface. When the upper grilling surface lifts from the lower grilling surface, the current in the motor changes. The settings of each motor at this instant are stored in a control to determine the calibration point when the upper grilling surface is level. The grill also automatically recognizes a food item placed on the lower grilling surface to determine the cooking parameters of the grill.

    • Mixing and dispensing apparatus for a frozen confection machine for mixing and dispensing a measured volume of frozen confection material and a flavoring material including edible solids. The apparatus comprises a mixing and measuring chamber including a mixing cylinder having a discharge head at one end, a rotary mixer in the cylinder and a dispensing piston slidable in the cylinder. The mixing and measuring chamber has a flavoring material inlet port, a flavoring material feed chamber communicating with the flavoring material inlet port, and a flavoring material feed piston for feeding flavoring material from the feed chamber to the mixing cylinder. The mixing and measuring chamber also has confection material inlet port adapted for connection to a frozen confection machine and a confection inlet valve for controlling flow of confection to the mixing cylinder. The discharge head has a discharge passage and a discharge valve for controlling flow through the discharge passage. Operating mechanism is provided for moving the dispensing piston in the mixing cylinder to a position contiguous to the discharge head to discharge substantially all of the material from the chamber. Heat transfer apparatus is provided for cooling the mixing cylinder from the frozen confection machine.

    • A dispenser (20) for consumable products is disclosed. The dispenser (20) uses a single motor (40) to both drive a spinner (75) to mix the product and move a valve assembly (42) to open and close the dispenser (20). The valve assembly (42) is axially aligned with the motor shaft (44) to avoid any undesirable moments associated with prior art offset valve actuators. The valve assembly (42) may be opened and closed by fixing an externally threaded shaft (46) on a drive shaft (44) extending from the motor (40) and then rotatably mounting an internally threaded flywheel (50) on the threaded shaft (46). A valve stem (64) may then be fixedly attached to the flywheel (50). When the motor (40) energizes, the inertia of the flywheel (50) causes it to accelerate more slowly than the nut (46), thus causing the flywheel (50) and valve stem (64) to axially translate along the nut (46) to open the valve assembly (42). When the motor (40) de-energizes, the momentum of the flywheel (50) causes it to decelerate more slowly than the nut (46), thus causing the flywheel (50) and valve stem (64) to axially translate along the nut (46) in an opposite direction to close the valve assembly (42).

    • A hot gas heat treat system is employed to cool mix in a hopper and a freezing cylinder and to heat the mix for pasteurization. A hopper liquid line solenoid valve at the inlet of the hopper and a cylinder liquid line solenoid valve at the inlet of the freezing cylinder each control the flow of refrigerant to the expansion valves which further control the flow of refrigerant that flows around the hopper and the freezing cylinder, respectively. A hopper hot gas solenoid valve at the inlet of the hopper and a cylinder hot gas solenoid valve at the inlet of the freezing cylinder control the flow of refrigerant from the compressor that flows around the hopper and the freezing cylinder. The system further includes a hot gas bypass valve that is opened when only the hopper is being cooled to provide additional load to the compressor. An EPR valve is positioned proximate to the hopper discharge to vary the temperature of the refrigerant exchanging heat with the hopper. A CPR valve is employed to control the inlet pressure of the compressor by reducing the amount of hot refrigerant flowing into the compressor suction. The system further includes a TREV valve to allow for liquid refrigerant injection to the compressor suction to control excessive compressor discharge during the cool cycle.
