    • A laser apparatus for producing a laser light beam can include a gain medium; a pump light source to provide a pump light beam to the gain medium; a first reflector disposed between the first gain medium and the first pump light source and spaced apart from a gain portion of the first gain medium; a second reflector; and an output coupler. The first reflector is substantially reflective to the laser light beam and substantially transmissive to the pump light beam. The first and second reflectors and the output coupler define a folded beam path having a first portion and a second portion. The first portion of the beam path extends from the first reflector to the second reflector through the gain medium and the second portion of the beam path extends from the first reflector to the output coupler through the gain medium. The first and second beam paths define, within the gain medium, a non-zero folding angle. Optionally, the laser apparatus can include a second pump light source that can pump the same, or a second, gain medium.

    • In a solid state, Q-switched laser oscillator of the type in which the laser medium emits unpolarized light and the acoustooptical Q-switch exhibits strong optical polarization dependence, a first quarter-wave plate disposed within the optical cavity between the Q-switch and one cavity mirror for causing the polarization components of the light beam resolved along the fast and slow axes of the quarter-wave plate to rotate 90* between successive passages through the Q-switch so that the light which was less strongly scattered during one passage through the Qswitch is more strongly scattered during the next passage through the Q-switch, and a second quarter-wave plate disposed within the optical cavity on the other side of the Q-switch for nullifying the effect of the first quarter-wave plate when the Q-switch is turned off so as to leave the polarization components of the laser oscillation unperturbed. This invention relates to laser Q-switches, and, more particularly, to acousto-optical Q-switches for solid state laser media of the type which inherently produce unpolarized light.

    • A high power Nd:YLF solid state laser is constructed by placing a plurality of Nd:YLF solid state rods (11, 12) in series within a laser resonator. Each rod (11, 12) is mounted in a pumping chamber for providing laser action. A spherical lens (13) may be incorporated within the resonator as required for establishing with the resonator mirrors (14, 15) a large intra-cavity beam diameter. A cylindrical lens is provided within the resonator as a separate element or combined with the spherical lens (13) to compensate for astigmatism in the thermal focusing of Nd:YLF rods. Alternatively, the rods may be used in pairs with a half-wave plate between them to provide for compensation of astigmatism. A laser capable of high TEM00 mode output power may be achieved by these arrangements.
