Feeding sheets.-In a machine for feeding and gumming sheets, such for example as envelope blanks, the pile is placed on a table 1 on the end of a rack 2 in gear with a pinion 12 on a shaft 13. The shaft 13 carries a worm-wheel 14, gearing with a worm on a shaft 16, turned intermittently by a pawl 18 on a lever 19. The lever 19 is raised to feed by a lever 20, which is pivoted on the side frame and oscillated by a cam, with which it is kept in contact by a spring. The lever 19 is depressed to move the pawl over the teeth, by a rod 24, connected to a piston 25, which bears on an arm 27 rocked by an adjustable screw 28 on the pneumatic suction tube 30. The table is counterbalanced by a weight 32. For the purpose of rapidly raising or lowering the table, the worm-wheel 14 is made loose on the shaft, and is formed on one side with clutch teeth adapted to engage a member 36, feathered on the shaft 13 and pressed toward the wheel 14 by a spring. The spring case is furnished with a handle by means of which the shaft 13 may be turned, and a pivoted auxiliary handle for disengaging the clutch. The blanks, which are retained between posts 6, on the table 1, 7, 9 on the bed, are lifted past spring scrapers 10 one by one by a suction tube 30 supported in vertically sliding bearings raised by a cam and depressed into contact with the pile by springs. The sucker is connected by a flexible tube to a pump 43 pivoted on the frame. the piston of which is actuated by a rod 45 and an eccentric 46 on a shaft 22. The suction is made and broken by a cock, operated by an arm 59, which is rocked by a cam 58 on the shaft 52. The blank, after having been lifted, is taken by rollers 63, 67 and fed thereby on to tapes 84. The rollers 63 are mounted on a divided shaft 64 in stationary bearings, while the lower rolls 67 are mounted in brackets 70, hung on the shaft 64, and oscillated thereon by a link 79, lever 80 and cam 83 on the shaft 52. The rollers are driven continuously by gearing from the shaft 52. The blanks are guided on to the tapes 84 by adjustable spring fingers. The blanks are positioned on the tapes by rollers 89, 91, the overlap being determined by the relative velocities of the separator and the conveyer. The blanks are carried in overlapping position around a drum 95, beneath a gumming- device 98 of usual construction, and over a roller 103, after which they are delivered by the tapes.
