    • Apparatus, systems, and methods, for perforating a downhole object while minimizing collateral damage to other objects, include use of a perforating device having a body, at least one fuel source having a characteristic that produces a selected mass flow rate, a selected burn rate, or combinations thereof, and an initiator for reacting the fuel to project a force through at least one port in the body. Characteristics of the at least one fuel source can include use of differing fuel types, shapes, and placement to achieve the desired mass flow rate or burn rate, and thus, a controlled force from the apparatus. An anchor or similar orienting device can be used to control the direction and position from which the force exits the apparatus. Openings formed in downhole objects can include a chamfered profile for facilitating future orientation or for injecting or removing substances from a formation.

    • A system and method for positioning a tool within a wellbore, wherein the interior surface of a positioning apparatus includes one or more pluralities of grooves, each defining a selected profile. A tool is lowered into the positioning apparatus, having a blade in communication therewith. The blade includes a plurality of protruding members, which define a profile complementary to at least one of the selected profiles formed by one of the pluralities of positioning apparatus grooves. A biasing member, in communication with the blade, can continually bias the blade toward the interior surface of the positioning apparatus to cause the profile of the blade to engage within the corresponding complementary profile of the positioning apparatus. Positioning a tool in this manner is advantageous for locating cutting tools at a precise location to sever a joint, perforate casing or stack multiple tool operations at a fixed, targeted point within a wellbore.

    • In cutting a downhole pipe in proximity to a closure in the pipe, the pipe is first perforated. A perforating torch is positioned with a pipe in proximity to the closure. The perforating torch produces cutting fluids in a first radial direction and produces an opening in the pipe, which cutting fluids produce a reaction force opposite to the first radial direction. This reaction force drives the perforating torch into contact with the pipe, anchoring it against any pressure wave produced by the cutting fluids and reflected off of the closure. Once the pipe is opened, a cutting torch is operated to sever the pipe. Any pressure wave generated by the cutting torch is vented through the opening.

    • The apparatus of the invention is used for severing a metal conduit disposed in a borehole extending downward into the earth. The apparatus includes a body adapted to be lowered into the metal conduit to be severed. The body is formed by a surrounding wall defining an elongated chamber with a central axis and having a lower portion, an intermediate portion, and an upper portion. The lower portion defines a cavity with a plurality of apertures extending through the wall in a given plane at angularly spaced apart positions located 360° around the axis for providing passages from said cavity to the outside of the wall. A combustible charge is located in the intermediate portion, and a movable seal member is located in the cavity above the apertures and below the combustible charge. An ignition device is coupled to the upper portion for igniting the combustible charge for creating a flame and hot combustion products for moving the movable seal member below the apertures for passage of the flame and hot combustion products into the cavity and out of the apertures for severing the surrounding metal conduit.
