    • 403,953. Jacking - attachments on motor vehicles. WILSON, L., 62, Kineton Road, Olton, Warwickshire. May 24, 1932, Nos. 14673/32 and 5152/33. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii).] A substantially C-shaped jacking attachment for motor vehicles of the kind which is pivoted at one end to the vehicle and, with movement of the vehicle, rides up on to the other end to effect the lift, such as described in Specification 287,654, [Class 79 (iii), Motor vehicles, Arrangement &c. of parts of], is so arranged as just to pass over the end of the riding curve to avoid any back-running tendency in the final position, the riding curve being preferably of the precise shape indicated in Fig. 1. A ground engaging rim 2 and integral web 3 may be cast of aluminium alloy, being pivoted at one end on a pin 5 carried by a projection 6 on the axle 7, with a shoulder 9 adapted to engage a flat 10 in the final position when the device rides from the curved portion B on to a flat extension 8. The surface 2 may be serrated or channelled to receive a strip of rubber &c., or the device may be built up of wood and steel or of a pair of plates bolted together with a strip of rubber &c. gripped between the operative edges. The pivotal attachment may be to a bracket 24, Fig. 5, adjustably set about a vertical pin 25 by means of a nut 26 and serrated washer 27, a number of holes 4 with co-operating stop-surfaces 30 providing for regulation of the lift. The device is raised and held in the inoperative position by means of a cable 12 controlled either from within or outside the vehicle. In Fig. 2, a jacking device 2 is shown fitted to each axle-end outside the frame 15, the rear brakes being adapted to be controlled conjointly by cables 16 for ordinary use or independently by means of cables 20 connected to a universally mounted lever 18 so that when it is desired to raise one of the differentially driven wheels off the ground that wheel may be braked to enable the necessary movement of the vehicle to operate the jacking member to be obtained by driving the other wheel. The Provisional Specifications describe cam shaped lifting members of spiral or volute form or comprising a circular arc eccentrically pivoted. In addition, according to the first Provisional Specification the jacking member may be retained in the inoperative position by a pin passing through a hole in its outer end into a hole in a part of the vehicle, withdrawal of the pin being effected by means of a cable, whilst, according to the second Provisional Specification, to obtain independent driving of the rear wheels the differential may be locked or an auxiliary brake may be applied to the raised wheel.

    • 462,673. Inclinometers. WILSON, P. L. Sept. 10, 1935, No. 25187. [Class 97(ii)] A U-shaped passage 3, 4 having reservoirs 1, 2, contains immiscible liquids of different specific gravities so that a junction between the liquids occurs in a transparent part 3 and indicates the inclination by movements which are magnifications of the alterations in levels in the reservoirs. As shown, the vertical glass tube 3 and the other tubular part 4 of the U -shaped passage communicate through a block 4a in which a graduated needle valve 26 is provided to regulate the period of oscillation. An air passage 42 controlled by a needle valve 41 connects the tops of the reservoirs 1, 2. A scale 31 is mounted beside the tube 3 which is protected by a door 31 when not in use. The triangular frame 5 carrying the parts 1, 2, 3, 4 is adjustably mounted on a main frame 5a by a bolt 6 and bolts 7, 8 engaging slots 9, 10 in the frame 5. A similar inclinometer is adjustably mounted on the main frame 5a with the plane containing its reservoirs at right-angles to the plane containing the reservoirs 1, 2.

    • An electrical insulating composition comprises a hydrocarbon oil having incorporated therein from 0,001 to 1% of one or more aliphatic amines having the formula R1NH2, R1NHR2, R1NR2R3 or R1NHR4NH2 wherein R1 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having from 8 to 20 carbon atoms, which may contain one or more olefinic bonds, R2 and R3 are aliphatic hydrocarbon groups containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, each of which may contain one or more olefinic bonds, and R4 is a difunctional aliphatic hydrocarbon group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the composition as a whole having a power factor (tan delta) of not more than 0,005. The base oil may be prepared from a naphthenic base mineral oil by solvent extraction, acid treatment and/or absorbent earth treatment. Suitable amines include hexadecylamine, didodecylamine, N,N1-dimethyl-octadecenylamine, N-amino propyloctadecenylamine, and mixture of amines from tallow or soya bean or coconut oil. A copper deactivator such as disalicylidene-ethylene-diamine may be added. The compositions may also contain colophony, hydrocarbon waxes or polyisobutylene. The compositions may be used to impregnate cables and capacitors.

A clamp for holding and positioning the two pivotal arms of a steel rule at a set angle to one another comprises a jig member adapted to engage the two arms of the rule and a clamping piece co-operating with the jig member. As shown, portions of the inclined sides 2, 3 of the plater-like jig member 1 are provided with lugs 7, 8 for retaining the arms 5, 6 of the rule at right angles. A slot 9 is cut centrally of the member 1 and below the slot there is provided a centrally drilled projecting lug 10. The triangular plate-like clamping piece 11 has a threaded stud 12 which is passed through the slot 9 and has secured thereto a nut 13 which is drilled and threaded at right angles to the stud to allow a screw 14 passing through the lug 10 to threadedly engage with the nut 13 whereby rotation of the screw 14 will move the clamping piece 11 relatively to the jig member 1. A set of jig members with sides of different inclinations may be provided.
