摘要： The present invention includes compositions and methods for screening for a candidate substance with ryanodine receptor (RyR)-modulatory activity, the method including: determining the ion-conducting ability and ability to change the concentration of the free cytoplasmic intracellular Ca 2+ by the RyR modulated by Estrogen receptor-β (ERβ) in cells or cell membranes expressing RyR and ERβ combination with, or in the absence of the estrogen; contacting the cells or cell membranes with a candidate substance capable of modulation the interaction between RyR and ERβ; and measuring the RyR mediated ion-conducting ability of the cells or cell membranes to change the concentration of the free cytoplasmic intracellular Ca 2+ by the candidate substance, whereby the modulatory activity of the candidate substance on RyR/ERβ interaction is determined.

摘要： Methods are disclosed for treating degenerative-inflammatory conditions of the nervous system (DICNS) in patients by administering a therapeutic composition that comprises a polyphenolic stilbene ( e.g. , trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene) and an acylic polyisoprenoid ( e.g. , geranylgeranylacetone). Pharmaceutical compositions are also disclosed that comprise an effective amount of both a polyphenolic stilbene compound ( e.g. , trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystiIbene) and an acylic polyisoprenoid compound ( e.g. , geranylgeranylacetone) for treating DICNS related conditions in a patient.

摘要： Methods and systems are disclosed for treating dry eye or a dry eye symptom with at least one formulation having at least one metal-containing catalytic antioxidant that provides enhanced benefits as compared to currently available treatments, including at least enhanced tissue regeneration. Various treatment approaches of embodiments of the present invention reduce damage to ocular gland tissue and/or allow preservation of gland function. In various embodiments, the intervention approach leads to a reduction of oxidative stress, reduction the cellular degeneration, and/or decline in the death of acinar cells induced by oxidative stress as compared to the prior art treatments. Various embodiments are suitable for the treatment of congenital, autoimmune conditions, chemical damage, mechanical damage, infections, and/or the like.

摘要： An improved ultra-fast cooling system is disclosed for cryopreservation of biomaterials. The ultra-fast cooling system is designed to uniformly vitrify or partially vitrify biomaterials, including but not limited to, human biomaterials, proteins, peptides, cells, stem cells, antibodies, neurons, human tissue, organs, cornea, skin, retina, eggs, sperm, embryos, body fluids, blood, serum, lymph fluid, animal tissue, plant biomaterials, plant tissue, germ plasma, pollen, plant sap, and bioengineered tissue, without cryoprotectants or with a low concentration of cryoprotectants. Cooling rates are sufficient to uniformly cryopreserve biomaterials, and can be used in diagnostic cytology and biological cryofixation applications. Other materials also can be cooled uniformly, such as inorganic materials for processing.

摘要： A guided mode resonance (GMR) sensor that can be used to simultaneously detect an array of analytes. It provides a diagnostic system that can rapidly detect an array of biomarker proteins in patient samples (such as blood, serum or plasma for example) which can be used as an accurate means to conduct a differential analysis of proteins that allows the discrimination of early and late stages of disease, such as metastatic versus primary ovarian serous carcinomas. The GMR sensor can be provided in a compact size such that it can be portable.
