    • 155,996. Griffiths, J. P. Dec. 24, 1919. Codes.-A coding and decoding device is provided with characters arranged in two rows and with two pointers which can be moved together to indicate corresponding characters in the two rows, and can be adjusted in relation to each other. The two rows can be relatively displaced, and the order of the characters in the rows can be varied. In the preferred arrangement, the characters are arranged in concentric rings in partitioned spaces 9, 8 formed on a fixed plate 4 and a rotatable disc 5 enclosed in a casing 2 provided with a glass cover 3, and the pointers 26, 27 are angularly adjustable on a central spindle 29. The pointers are rotated by means of a knob 23 on a spindle 21 provided with a bevel-wheel 24 in engagement with a bevel-wheel 25 on the spindle 29. The bevel-wheel 25 is held in the set position by a detent 31 which can be released by depressing the projecting end of a lever, not shown in Fig. 1. The character blocks 8, 9 are tapered slightly in two directions to fit securely in the compartments in the plate 4 and disc 5. Channels 14, 15 are provided in the plate 4 in which the bloclcs can be temporarily placed when rearranging the order of the blocks in either row. The blocks are secured in position by a ring 16 adjustable by screws 18 to bring- flanges 17 to bear against the bottom faces of the blocks. The spindle 21 is movable endways against the action of a spring 12 to bring a pinion 20 into gear with a circular rack 19 on the disc 5, for adjusting the inner row of blocks 8, the bevel-gear 24, 25 being then temporarily disconnected.

    • 421,418. Railway chairs and keys ; securing rails to sleepers. GRIFFITHS, J. P., 44, North Street, Durban, South Africa. June 20, 1933, No. 17564. [Class 104 (ii)] Rails are secured to chairs 3 or sleepers by clips 4 having a rounded spigot 5 engaging the rounded end of a slot 8 in the chair, &c., and a front spigot 6 a little narrower than the slot 8 to permit the clip to turn slightly about the spigot 5. The clip is fixed by a bolt 9 having a cross - head engaging under the chair, &c. A tapered key 11 is driven into the space between the rail flange and a vertical face on the clip. If the rail creeps, the key 11 is carried inwards, turning the clip on its spigot 5 and increasing the grip of the key on the rail. An abutment 16 may be arranged between the rail head and the square front edge of the clip. In the form shown in Figs. 6 and 8, a pair of spigots 18 are arranged on the clip parallel to the rail, and the face 19 is tapered to receive the key. In the form shown in Fig. 10 the clip has a pair of spigots 32, one narrower than the other, engaging a slot parallel to the rail and enclosed by a tapered slot 30 in a key 25. Specification 385,553 is referred to.

    • 385,553. Securing railway &c. rails. GRIFFITHS, J. P., 44, North Street, Durban, South Africa. July 18, 1932, No. 20306. Addition to 358,001. [Class 104 (ii).] The rail 1 is secured to a chair, chair-plate, or sleeper by clips 4 which engage the rail flange and are fixed by T-headed bolts 5 which pass through the clips and slots 12 in the plate 2. The clips have depending lugs 9 which engage the slots 6 and are tapered on their outer edge to fit the tapered outer edges 12 of the slots, so that movement of the clips towards the narrow end of the slot, due to rail creep, binds them more tightly on the rail flange. In another form, only one clip is used, the opposite edge of the rail flange being held by a lug integral with the plate 2. In the form shown in Fig. 12, a buttress clip 21 is combined with one of the clips 20. In the form shown in Fig. 14 for a double or check rail chair, one of the clips 30 is of buttress form, and has a lip 35 supporting a key 31 provided with enlarged ends. The slot in the chair 34 for the middle clip 32 has both edges parallel, and the rail flange enters a recess 37 in the bolt 33. In another form, the two lugs 9 are tapered in opposite directions and the two ends of the slots 6 are correspondingly tapered so that movement of the clips in either direction presses the clips more tightly on the rail.
