    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide bias techniques for magnetic tape media. SOLUTION: The disclosure is directed to a method for creating a remanence magnetization on a magnetic tape medium. The magnetic tape is first substantially demagnetized, e.g., erased, by an erasure unit having multiple magnetic elements of alternating polarity. The erased magnetic tape is then passed by a bias magnet that creates remanence magnetization on the magnetic tape. The remanence magnetization tape is then passed through a servo write head that writes servo patterns to the remanence magnetized magnetic tape. The bias magnet can be housed within the erasure unit or within a bias unit, and the distance between the bias magnet and the tape part of the magnetic tape can be adjusted to create the desired remanence magnetization on the magnetic tape.       SOLUTION: A servo frame includes a servo window written by different frequency so that redundant positioning information is provided. The servo frame includes one set of first servo windows, recorded with first frequency arranged in a grid shape pattern, and one set of second servo windows recorded with second frequency. With the different frequency of the servo window, the servo frame can achieve enhancement in redundancy for the positioning information. By including a plurality of the servo frames, a servo track can appropriately position a data read/write head adjoining a corresponding data track. The redundancy embedded in each of the servo frames suppresses error of the positioning information approximately to the minimum.

SOLUTION: The invention relates to the pattern of a servo window based on amplitude eliminating the conventional necessity of a track identification mark, various servo writing devices capable of facilitating the creation of such servo patterns, and a head configuration. The pattern of the servo window also eliminates the conventional necessity of a synchronous mark. The servo window pattern itself enables identification of a certain track from other tracks in one or more servo bands, and synchronization is carried out essentially without needing any synchronous marks between servo frames. In other words, the servo window based on the same amplitude for defining the center line of the track is arranged to provide track identification information, and unique synchronous information if necessary.
