    • 139,668. Parsons, J. G. April 17, 1919. Propelling; steering and balancing.-Relates to paddle apparatus for propelling and steering aircraft. The shaft A is journaled in a bearing B which is secured to the hull of the vessel, and the hub D of the paddle E rotates on the bearing B. The paddle comprises two side walls E and blades F pivoted on axles F . Each axle F carries a sprocket-wheel G which is geared by means of an endless chain H with another sprocket-wheel J mounted on the shaft A. The sprocket-wheels and chain may be replaced by pulleys and a connecting-band. The shaft A carries a bevel-wheel K meshing with a bevelwheel L carried at the upper end of the pendulum M. The paddle is driven by a gear-wheel fixed on the end of the sleeve D, and the effect of the sprocket-wheel and chain gearing is to keep the blades at the same angle during rotation. A parallel linkage may be substituted for the sprocket-wheels and chain. The effect of a movement of the pendulum is to alter the angular position of the blades and cause a corresponding elevation or depression of the aircraft to which the paddle is attached.

A self-propelled ship has auxiliary screw propulsion means comprising a longitudinally disposed auxiliary propeller shaft or shafts 4 driven by an auxiliary power plant 6. The auxiliary screw propellers 4a, 4b, are adapted to be shut off from the flow of water when inoperative. The auxiliary propellers may be mounted in tandem on a common shaft 4, which extends rearwardly of the main propellers 2, and are housed in a stern tunnel or tunnels 3b each having a sloping entrant portion 3a and an exit portion 3c with a slight downward slope. The tunnel has a fixed bottom plate 8 and hinged doors 7, 7a which are operated by screw jacks. According to the Provisional Specification the tunnel outlet may also be closed by a sliding door. The auxiliary power plant 6 may be a steam, petrol, or Diesel engine or an electric motor. Two or more auxiliary screw propulsion means may be employed.
