    • A thermal dryer used to dry wet material includes a drying chamber and a storage bin. Material is transferred from the storage bin onto a movable support means positioned within the drying chamber. A furnace supplies hot gas to the drying chamber and the gas passes over the movable support means to dry the wet material positioned thereon. The temperature of the gas that has been passed over the wet material is automatically maintained at a preselected temperature by controlling the amount of wet material on the movable support means. The temperature of the gas that has been passed over the support means is controlled independently of the temperature of the gas supplied by the furnace. The amount of wet material in the storage bin is automatically maintained below a preselected amount by controlling the temperature of the hot gas supplied by the furnace to the drying chamber. When the amount of wet material exceeds the preselected amount, the temperature of the hot gas supplied by the furnace is increased. This results in a corresponding increase in the temperature of the gas that has been passed over the wet material. In order to reduce the temperature of the gas that has been passed over the wet material, the amount of wet material positioned on the movable support means is increased. An increase in the amount of wet material transferred from the storage bin to the movable support means results in a reduction in the amount of wet material in the storage bin.

    • An apparatus for forming large diameter shafts between the roof of a mine tunnel and the surface of the earth. A pilot hole is drilled between the surface of the earth and the roof of the mine. A pipe is inserted through a pilot hole to the roof of the mine, and an arm is connected to the lower end of the pipe. The arm has a plurality of jets mounted facing toward the roof and in fluid communication with the inside of the pipe. The upper end of the pipe is connected to a high pressure pump which in turn is connected to a source of fluid, such as water. Apparatus is provided for rotating the upper end of the pipe and for pulling the pipe toward the surface of the earth as the roof is eroded by fluids from the jets impinging on the roof of the mine.

    • A transmitting device mounted on a trolley vehicle for operation within an underground mine transmits a first coded signal through an overhanging transmission line that extends through the mine haulageway to a receiver and is arranged in parallel relation to the trolley wire. The receiver delivers an output signal to a circuit breaking device in response to the input signal received from the transmitting device. The output signal from the receiver adjusts the overload setting of the circuit breaking device to allow current flow from a rectified source to the trolley wire at a predetermined level as required for operation of the trolley vehicle above the minimum current level provided continuously on the trolley wire. The incremental increase of current through the trolley wire associated with a fault will exceed the overload setting of the circuit breaking device thereby opening the circuit breaking device to interrupt the flow of current passing through the trolley wire. an emergency ''''off'''' signal transmitted as a second coded signal to the receiver locks out all other signals being transmitted from other trolley vehicles to the receiver and thereby actuates the circuit breaking device to interrupt the flow of current to the trolley wire.

    • The level wind spooling apparatus includes a spooling shaft mounted in a spooling device housing and connected to apparatus operable to rotate the spooling shaft. The outer cylindrical surface of the spooling shaft has formed therein a pair of compound threads including a right-hand thread and a left-hand thread, each thread having the same pitch. The root and side walls of each thread form a continuous cam track extending along the length of the spooling shaft. A cam track follower assembly mounted on the spooling shaft includes an actuator positioned in one of the cam tracks to guide the follower assembly longitudinally along the shaft during rotation of the shaft and operable to transfer, at either end of the shaft, to the oppositely oriented cam track for guidance of the follower assembly in a reverse direction longitudinally along the shaft to the other end thereof. The housing substantially encloses the spooling shaft and follower assembly along the length of the shaft. A longitudinal slot extends along the front of the housing to permit the passage along the housing of a flexible strand guide assembly connected to the follower assembly within the housing. A plurality of stabilizing guide members are secured in spaced relation with each other to the inside surfaces of the housing walls and extend inwardly therefrom adjacent to preselected portions of the external surfaces of the follower assembly and are arranged to guide and stabilize the follower assembly in its traverse along the spooling shaft. The housing walls form a substantially enclosed container for lubricating material for the spooling shaft, the surfaces of the guide members and the follower assembly.
