The image replicating combiner comprises an input surface and an output surface, and is configured to generate a plurality of replications of an image incident on the input surface at output surface. The optical system is positioned in an optical path between the image generating unit and the input surface of image replicating combiner, and is arranged to transform a set of rays from the image generating unit into a plurality of sets of rays with respective different focal points, such that the plurality of sets of rays, when incident on the input surface, combine on extraction at the output surface to give each replication substantially the same focal point at a viewing position.
