Disclosed is a charging station for charging an energy storage device of an electric vehicle, the charging station comprising: a switching apparatus which is designed to open and close the phases and the neutral conductor of the charging station; a residual current sensor which is associated with the phases and the neutral conductor and designed to ascertain a residual current having a DC current component and an AC current component; a first unit which is designed to detect sinusoidal AC residual currents and pulsing DC residual currents on the basis of the ascertained residual current and, on the basis thereof, to provide a first actuation signal for actuating the switching apparatus to open the phases and the neutral conductor; a second unit which is designed to detect DC residual currents on the basis of the ascertained residual current and, on the basis thereof, to provide a second actuation signal for actuating the switching apparatus to open the phases and the neutral conductor; and a control apparatus for controlling components of the charging station, which is designed to provide a third actuation signal for actuating the switching apparatus to open the phases and the neutral conductor.
