Disclosed in the present invention is a cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery in which small particles having a predetermined average particle diameter (D50) and large particles having a larger average particle diameter (D50) than the small particles are mixed, wherein the small particles are at least one selected from the group consisting of particles having a carbon material coating layer formed on a part or all of the surface of large primary particles having an average particle diameter (D50) of 1 μm or greater, particles having a carbon material coating layer formed on a part or all of the surface of secondary particles formed by agglomeration of the large primary particles, and a mixture thereof, and wherein the large particles have an average particle diameter (D50) of 5 μm to 20 μm, and are secondary particles formed by aggregation of fine primary particles having an average particle diameter (D50) smaller than the large primary particles, wherein the large primary particles and the fine primary particles are nickel-based lithium transition metal oxides.
