The invention relates to a method for monitoring a process for machining a workpiece (W, W', W"), in particular laser welding, by means of a high-energy machining beam (50; 250), the method comprising the steps of: defining a machining figure (58; 258) which defines a plurality of machining positions (64, 66, 68) having associated multi-dimensional machining position coordinates; generating a high-energy machining beam (50; 250) and projecting and/or focusing the machining beam (50; 250) onto the workpiece (W, W', W") according to the machining figure (58; 458); generating a measuring beam (28; 228) by means of an optical coherence tomograph (16), wherein the measuring beam (28; 228) can be coupled into the machining beam (50; 250); defining measurement positions (70, 72, 74) on the workpiece (W, W', W") at at least some of the machining positions (64, 66, 68) and/or in the vicinity thereof; determining measurement values at the measurement positions (70, 72, 74) by directing the measuring beam (28; 228) onto the measurement positions (70, 72, 74); and generating at least one representation (76, 86, 102, 106, 110; 233; 433) which is based on multi-dimensionally location-dependent information relating to the machining position coordinates, the measurement values and/or the measurement positions (70, 72, 74). The invention also relates to an associated device, a control unit and a computer program product.
