The invention relates to a method (24) for operating a distance sensor (10) of a motor vehicle (2), said distance sensor having a transmitter (8), a first receiver (12), and a second receiver (14), for monitoring a monitoring region (20). The monitoring region (20) is divided into multiple spatial regions (28), and a value (32) is assigned to each spatial region (28). A signal (34) is emitted by the transmitter (8), and the time curve of a first signal (38) received by the first receiver (12) during a first time period (40) is divided into multiple first segments (42), each first segment (42) being assigned to one of the spatial regions (28), and the value (32) of the assigned spatial region (28) is modified if a first condition (46) is satisfied. The time curve of a second signal (54) received by the second receiver (14) during a second time period (56) is divided into multiple second segments (58), each second segment (58) being assigned to one of the spatial regions (28), and the value (32) of the assigned spatial region (28) is modified if a second condition (64) is satisfied. Each value (32) is checked for the presence of an additional condition (68), and if the additional condition (68) is satisfied, the presence of an object (22) in the respective spatial region (28) is inferred. The invention additionally relates to a distance sensor (10) of a motor vehicle (2).
