The invention relates to a ceramic material which comprises ZnO as the main component and additives, comprising at least one compound which contains a metal element, wherein the metal element is selected from a group comprising Bi, Y, Cr, Co, Mn, Ni, Sb, and dopants, and comprising at least one compound which contains a metal cation selected from AI3+, B3+, Ba2+, Si4+. The invention additionally relates to a method for producing the ceramic material and for producing a varistor which comprises a ceramic body that contains the ceramic material.
