The invention relates to an electronic switch (1) comprising at least semiconductor switch (2) which can be switched off, a varistor (3), and a capacitor (4), the electronic switch (1) comprising a first connection (11) and a second connection (12), between which an electrically conductive connection can be produced or can be interrupted by means of the at least one semiconductor switch (2) which can be switched off, depending on the switched state of said semiconductor switch (2) which can be switched off. In order to improve the electronic switch in respect of protection against overvoltages, according to the invention a series circuit (5) formed of the varistor (3) and the capacitor (4) is connected to a first diode (15) by means of the first connection (11) and to a second diode (16) by means of the second connection (12). The invention further relates to a direct voltage system (10) comprising an electronic switch (1) of this kind. The invention also relates to a method for limiting overvoltages in an electronic switch (1) of this kind or in a direct voltage system (10) of this kind. Inductive energy of an element (25) connected to the electronic switch (1) is transmitted into the capacitor (4) in the event of a switching-off process after a limit, defined by the varistor (3), has been exceeded.
