A compact, foldable side rail for a bed comprising an upper part (120) and a lower part (130) that are hinged together at a first pivot (150). The side rail is attached to a bed by a positioning system that causes the lower part of the side rail to fold toward the upper part and allows the upper part to lie in substantially the same plane as it is raised and lowered. The side rail includes a locking mechanism. The positioning mechanism comprises an upper part pivot arm (140) that attaches to the upper part via a second pivot (126) and attaches to the bed via a third pivot (127); and a lower part pivot arm (141) fixedly attached to the lower part (130) and that attaches to the bed via a fourth pivot (128).
