Adapting a coder (20) for coding of performance management data of a network element (60), for transmission to a management system (40), involves analysing past received performance management data to make a prediction of which values of that performance management data are more likely to occur in a future period than other values. The coder is modified according to the prediction to code the predicted values preferentially compared to the other values for the future period. This can enable the coder to be modified to code a relatively small set of the more likely values since typically only small proportion of the range of possible values occurs. So the coder can now code preferentially a smaller number of possible values. Thus it can achieve more compression or more efficient or more accurate coding for transmission.
