Disclosed is a method for tracing marine species movement and location by using ratios of stable Iron isotopes. Marine phytoplankton consumes Iron as part of their photosynthetic process. If unique Iron isotope formulations are delivered to photosynthesizing phytoplankton, they will consume the Iron formulation. Marine species that feed on these phytoplankton cells will also contain the Iron formulation. Mass spectrometry may then be used to identify the unique Iron isotope ratios in marine species that have fed, directly or indirectly, upon the phytoplankton. This may therefore be used as a method for identifying marine species that have occupied a specific location and time, and tracing their movements. This may also be used as a fingerprint in fishmeal, allowing fish that have fed upon a specific formulation of fishmeal to be uniquely identified. Because these isotopes of Iron are non-radioactive and present in nature, these isotopes are not harmful to the environment or organisms that feed upon them.
